Is an AVS webmaster an affiliate or paysite owner? Whatever you call it, they're under the umbrella of a program that takes a cut of their revenue.

and CCBill and Epoch take a cut of revenue out of paysites, does that mean we should just call paysite operators "affiliates"?

No because they're only processing the subscription. They're not doing the hosting, updating the main home site, getting more amateur sites up etc.

But I get your point. Can we end this?

that is right. A few very successful sites out there just do not want to be copied, so they keep to themselves and make a nice chunk of money.

I know what you mean. My point is that it's a little hard to refer to the SC girls as "affiliates" when they clearly have a direct connection to the running of their own websites and the content that appears on their site, as apposed to say an affiliate of TCG, ARS, NastyDollars who have no input into the sites they send traffic to.

I suppose the term "affiliate" is a bit vague.

I think what Sly went is paysites where all the promotion/traffic generation is done internally.

That's not quite the case for SC.

50-75 joins a day? Not many.

But 10-20k a month? More than you might think.

There are lots of reasons not to go with an affliate program - ask anyone who runs one.

There are also lots of reasons TO go with an affiliate program - ask anyone who runs one.

It becomes a matter of choice and what level of success is acceptable to you.

Historically, you saw this a lot in the amateur arena. Sites started off with no affliate program, and grew to a comfortable level, successful by any standard. THEN they started affliate programs. Homegrown and Carol Cox are two I could name without feeling I was saying anything anyone didn't want revealed. Both those sites were doing very well prior to starting their affliate programs.

an addendum:

I was once told by the owner of a very large, well known affiliate program:

Unless you are bringing deep pockets to the table, a good rule of thumb on starting a paysite - if you can't make it profitable with your own traffic and no affiliates, you probably won't make it as a sponsor.

Opinion only, but I can see the sense of it.

We operate around 60 mainstream sites focused on the same group of products. Average of 150-225 sales daily with no affiliates.

On another note I read that redclouds.com had 600,000 paid members in an article that was made in 2001.

The funny thing was that they was complaing about
bandiwidth costs in that article.

FemDom sites with good content are netting an average of 10k with no affiliates. I am pretty sure that is standard with most good femdom sites.

Very true.

We are converting well on www.paulmarkhamteens.com with TGP and bought traffic, 2 of our affiliated also do very well. But as I see it unless I spend a fortune enticing affiliates and give away 35%+ of my turn over it's never going to take off. Plus wiith affiliates I will have to spend hours looking after some of them.

We got a student working 20 hours a week, submitting by hand and Chameleon and signing up over 30 a week, and growing, with Chameleon and some partner accounts. Low figures but we are newbies at traffic.

Now do I take on more guys full time, pay for spots and traffic and concentrate on making the site retain or put in a lot more work with affiliates, which will effect the business?

100 joins a day without affiliates, must be the same income as 200 a day with them, they can be expensive to get, keep and maintain.

I guess we will go the middle road and have our own traffic sources plus let affiliates join us if they want to and try to convert and retain their traffic.
