Not a prestigious career by any stretch, but an honest one, and for five months he drove a little Datsun car all over the city and was damned good at it, and he supported his family like a fucking man.

I never forgot examples like that in my life, for it is those examples that have helped instill in me the notion that where there is a will there is a way, and also that real men do what it takes to keep going. I no longer have to worry about pumping gas or flipping burgers, but if the interweb ever collapses and it comes to that, I would again do what it takes.

I had huge anxiety issues and could not deal with the public due to a pretty bad stuttering problem. I was not be able to go into classrooms without anxiety attacks and social phobia due to the fear of having to communicate and be ridiculed at one point. I left school as an outcast due to my anxiety and was jobless for a few years. Now that I am over that shit and found ways to deal with it I had to start from rock bottom cleaning and earning a living to work my way up the financial ladder and gain experience working. I then got into adult and am loving it. I have set goals, ideas and a long term plan to make myself independent financially. Right now I am working for someone else doing mostly grunt work that most of you would have no idea how to do and are too damn lazy to do. I don't think that I "gave up" or have a "lesser life" for doing so.
Ever thought that maybe this Sears salesman has had similar experiences to this? maybe he fell off a ladder and is working his way back up.

it's also possible this guy cannot afford an education. Not everyone can get student loans and not everyone is in a position where they can work and go to school at same some. An older friend of mine who is in his 50's took a computer course when he was 45 after being laid off from his old job and he's selling books at chapters now. It just did him no good, his age was a barrier and nobody gave him a chance when he applied for and pursued more "meaningful" jobs during 10 years of job hunting.

Maybe this sears guy has the same problem. You never know.

Now with a heart attack under his belt a stressful more "meaningful" job might be too much for him.

Maybe this sears guy had a heart attack 10 years ago and sales is about all his health can handle,

Let me teach you something about working, ok?

A lot of the times if you take a management position you end up sacrificing the shifts you can handle. Also, a hike in pay can throw you into a different tax bracket that ends up earning you LESS.

Also, not everyone wants the stresses of a managerial position.

Go work in the real world for a few years doing hard work, sales and stressful positions on both sides of the wall, grunt, and managerial then come back and tell me the guy is a loser for not being manager.

Some people come from different backgrounds from you. For some people, a job at sears making 35k a year might be a dream come true. Not everyone has lofty aspirations - and whereas you, and myself obviously wouldn't be happy in such a job - plenty of people are perfect contect and happy with said jobs.

my uncle was a moron but he had one great skill - his ability to sell, he worked for 10 years at Sears as a salesman. And even in the 80's he made more than 90% of this board. He made about 75k and my aunt made about the same - nice income for two people without college degrees. He left Sears and went on to sell home improvements, and made more than 100k/year. One day I went on his sales calls with him - omg what a bullshit artist, he was a master - no way in the world could i do what he did. not sure i would tho even if i could. i worked at a stereo shop, big one, and was trained to do alot of bait n switch, ethnic profiling etc - i sucked, i got people the best deal i could on stuff that was decent quality.

The "other side" to this guy is he has a masters degree, Phd and is a prolific writer for .. what's it called? *g*.. National Geographic.

He has done loads of projects from China to the Gallapagos Islands. In the last year, he has completed another in UAE which involved over 2000 people and is now a "model" being picked up by the UN as a method of "cultivating the desert".

I have his CV on my desk right now - every damned page puts me to shame - loaded with "credits" from UN to UNESCO - about 50-60 pages long, - with letters of thanks from the goverments of a good few countries.

This is the 47 year old guy who sells fruit at a market

Appearances can be deceptive....

PS... I am damned proud this guy is on our team for a project we are doing - I could never have wished for a more qualified person and a loyal as hell friend.

It was a Sears, and was already about 12 years old, and I STILL have that old tv and it still works, and it STILL has a great picture. I've never once had to take it in for service either. Damn thing is over 30 years old by now.
