Holy fuck! (update on my nephew)

I'm on the phone with my sister right now and she just told me that the docs fitted Bailey's head with a helmet that he has to wear almost all the time to protect his head.. BUT my sister and her b/f got a bill for this helmet and it's $1300

They have like $0 so I will try what I can to help them pay that insane bill. That's ridiculous. $1300 seems way over priced for something like that.

I was charged $38 for two cottonballs once, $1300 for a helmet sounds about right.

Hospitals charge outrageous prices. I was in the hospital for a few hours and my bill was like $2000. While your nephew is wearing a helmet to help sustain his life the doctor is making a payment on his Porsche.

Go to the hospital and get treated before it gets worse. Then go on a payment plan to pay your bill. You can pay like $50 monthly, it's not bad at all and will be worth it. If you can afford a night out with the guys, you can afford health care. You just need to decide which is more important to you.

Yeah, hospitals are crazy. I know a year ago my son split his forehead open pretty good, it wasn't bleading, but it was one of those big open wounds that needed stitches of glue.

We went in the emergency room and one of the nurses came in with a little kit which had a cleaning towel and a little tiny tube of glue which she cleaned up the cut, then glued it shut.

A couple of weeks later, I got the bill, they charged me $490, $65 of that was for the little paper towel and the single use stick of medical super glue. The other $425 was for the nurse (note it WASN'T even a doctor) to glue him up which didn't take long.

people seem to forget prices are the way they are due to all the deadbeats who run up a 100,000 dollar tab and are never heard from again, no different with car insurance and so on.

I think if you guys did a little research you would see that you could get alot of help from the government on both the Provincial and Federal level for low income families who have to deal with sever medical conditions.

So the fact that doctors are extremely well-paid has nothing to do with it? Or the fact that medical equipment and drugs are ridiculously overpriced?

I never said that they were not told prior to getting the bill.. I was just stating that $1300 for this is fucking ridiculous. ya, the government helps LOW income families but my sisters boyfriends has a pretty good job so they are not what they would call a low income family BUT there are bills at home that need to be paid for.. car payment, rent and everything else. So that takes up most of his income. Then they have all the expenses being away from home. it's not like they're a few minutes away from home. They are in Toronto and will be for quite awhile.

you think $1,300 for a device that will keep him alive is a lot?

A motorcycle helmet can cost a few hundred dollars . . . .I think it sounds pretty reasonable

Have them setup a payment plan. The hospitals are willing to work with people. Believe it or not, they don't want people dying, but at the same time they too have expenses that need to be paid for.

Having medical conditions is very expensive and yes, it does suck. It's just one of those things in life you need to deal with.

That's smart.. because it's much more convenient to die than it is to pay a pesky bill.

My mother died of pnuemonia.

EDIT: You're an idiot. Go to the fucking doctor.

Most economic plans are flawed in that way.... a very good percentage of families make too much to get help, but too little to pay for things on their own.

yep, a lot of people from here and other boards have helped and I am greatful for that which is why I didn't start this thread to get money from people.. Was just an update kind of thing. I will look into the other options and also inform my sister about it so she can do the same.

should doctors not make the most money out of all professions? Doctors in general are fucking godsends. I dont know where you live but docs deserve all the credit in the world IMHO

Of course the docs deserve the credit. But then we have the people higher up that run the show. Making people believe that a cure is being worked on for severe deseases when we all know damn well that a cure in NOT PROFITABLE and therefor will never come. All they will do is create a very expensive treatment that will "prolong" your life but still keep the illness you have. Some people don't wanna believe that this goes on but it does and always will. They have the cure for most killer deseases but they will never be revealed to the public unless the entire world population will die if they don't get it (after all, what would business be like if all your "customers" are dead?)

the doctors are not to blame for the ridiculous prices. they do their job while the higher ups fuck with our wallet

may sound right BUT a motorcycle helmet you use pretty much forever as long as you have/use a motor bike.. This medical helmet is not to make him live.. it's just there to protect his head in case he falls or something up till they put the piece of skull back on.. After that, the helmet is totally useless and will not be needed at all. Therefor, that's like flushing $1300 down the drain. If it was something that he had to use for the rest of his life then it would be more understandable. Seeing as it may only need to be worn for a few months then $1300 is a little steep.

it's more of a precautionary thing. it's like them charging you $100 for a band aid that will be used for a very short period of time.

yes, it's good to be safe just in case. I'm not saying that it's not. But $1300 for a very temporary thing?

Yeh, I'm sure my 16 year old cousin that was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 5 is really upset that doctors were able to develop a treatment that prolonged her life.

well yes, they are also to blame for making the prices that were already high increase even more.. Problem is, there are way too many deadbeats on this planet which is very unfortunate.

Well if your family doesn't think his life is worth the $1,300 "temporary" investment, don't buy it. Problem solved.

After that, the helmet is totally useless and will not be needed at all. Therefor, that's like flushing $1300 down the drain. If it was something that he had to use for the rest of his life then it would be more understandable. Seeing as it may only need to be worn for a few months then $1300 is a little steep.
You are fucking pathetic. I feel sorry for the kid and hope to God his parents don't think the same way you do.

well, it was.. Otherwise I would have just come out and ask for help straight out. You're free to think what you want though. No harm done with that.

I haven't gotten money in quite awhile now and never once started a thread asking for more. If people wanna help that's up to them, not me. in this case it was not my intention to try to get more money. Sure, by re-reading my first post it does sound like it, I agree but that was not my intention.

Sorry to hear this, Yngwie. If it was one of my kids going through this I don't know how I'd ever cope emotionally, financially, physically... it's hard enough to deal with minor medical emergencies with my kids, I can't imagine what it would be like to have to go through something this extreme.

Tell them to look into family services, a lot of the times something can be done to help. Around here my sick cousin had something called the ' I-Team ' to take care of stuff like that.

Yngwie, is your nephew fine now otherwise though? If so, I think it might be time you started something that generates a substancial income to help him with. GFY cna only help for so long, if you truly love your nephew, start making money to help him.

There are many ways to make good chunks of cash short term. Explore them.

ok, well instead of getting insulted foir simply stating my opinion I will leave.. Do I look like I'm laughing about what happened to him? Do I look like I don't give a fuck? Since the day it happened I've been trying to help in whatever way I could which included giving ALL my earnings towards his cause.. Think what you want about me. I don't care anymore.

I also feel like you should be going to companies/organizations who help with this kind of stuff, instead of coming here asking for it. this is the last place i'd be thinking about, if my nephew was in this situation.
