Mystery Surrounding Vieques
The Navy claims it needs Vieques Island for bombing because "It is unique; there is no other place like it." Okay, then if it's unlike anywhere we might be fighting (as they are saying, by implication), why does it have ANY value as a place to rehearse a future war?
Wouldn't it make more sense to rehearse in a place the isn't unique, but is more like a place we might be fighting a future war? ------------------ Producer of truly original teen/young woman-oriented adult content at Wonders of the Unseen World [This message has been edited by UnseenWorld (edited 06-19-2001).] |

whine whine whine?
![]() Perhaps they meant "This is a unique island for bombing practice in that no where else does the land contours match so many diverse geographical formations". Why must you insert implied meaning into people's mouths? I could do the same game all day long. In short, the Navy has been practicing there. Let Them. Why all the whining now? Don't people have better things to do like.. I dunno.. Get a job? -Phil |

If no one lives there and they have been bombing it forever... then what IS the point to NOT continue? It's not like they can go in and dig all that stuff up and make it safe for anything... How many bombs are buried just waiting for someone to step on them? But what do I know. Other than 2 have gone off lately, one in Japan and one in Europe, and they thought they basically had most of those found.

The word unique basically means "nothing else like it." That would seem to include all the places we might have a war. They say they need deep water to get close enough to practice shelling, but if places close enough to practice shelling are so rare, it would seem that places close enough to shell are equally rare, no? ------------------ Producer of truly original teen/young woman-oriented adult content at Wonders of the Unseen World |

War is certainly not a good thing. But what the people don't realize is that piece of land will be useless for anything else. Think of the amount of live ammunition dropped on the island. Now consider that the in Germany they still take up live bombs from the second world war. There's no possible way they are going to make that a resort or bird sanctuary or park or something like that if the Navy decides to leave. ------------------ Make dirty money from your surfers Dirty Gold Jack Thumbs TGP Search Engine Driven TGP - Pages LISTED INSTANTLY |
