He wasn't fired from a government job. He was fired from a privately owned company. The whole "freedom of speech" thing doesn't apply. He should have been fired.

Shocking that it can happen? Yes.

Surprising that it happens under this regime..errr... administration? No. Not even a little bit.

Living in AMERICA gives ME the right to fire people I don't like...

Wait -- that goes against YOUR definition of freedom.

America is starting to sound more and more like the old Soviet empire.

Toe the party line or get canned.. and don't try taking a plane from one part of your country to the other without your "papers".

Yes, I read the whole story, whats your point?

Did you jump to the conclusion that my statements were about free speech? Thats the wrong assumption to make.

The point is that the intolerance of people these past few years has become borderline extremist. If I own a company and dont like the political views of my employee, I fire them. Thats intolerant, and it's shocking to me that close minded people do such things.

Keeping an open mind and tolerant attitude is important. When running a company, and when reading messages.

Did you jump to the conclusion that MY statement was about free speech? I just asked if you read the article. Let's say one of your employees did something to offend one of your biggest clients. Would you not fire them in an instant?

I suggest all of you that have paid employees or outsource any work do a poll of your underlings political views and act accordingly.

Dont forget to post a laughing smiley on their pink slips.

Oh well then my mistake. I did make an assumption that since you took the time to ask if I'd read it with the obligatory laugh, together with your comment above about free speech, that your unspoken point was that everyone who gets upset when this type of thing happens doesnt understand that a private company has a right to hire and fire as they see fit.

Just wanted you to know that for my part, with my comments, that was already taken into account ahead of time.

Perhaps a memo to the staff that an important client was sponsoring tickets for an event with the president, and that any anti-bush sentiments would result in termination would have been in order.

Maybe that was done, the story doesnt say. One thing is for sure though, that company got plenty of publicity from the firing, if from nothing else.

At any rate, I dont like this type of thing making the news. It highlights how devisive we seem to have gotten. The devision existed before the last election judging by the results.. and it doesnt seem to have healed over much. I think it's sad.

Was this a company sponsored event?

Was he being payed to be there?

Or was he there off the clock under his own free will?

I think the firing in this case was ok. It's doesn't seem appropriate to do what he did considering the circumstances. There is a time and place to voice (or in this case shout) your political opinion, but not at a rally with your boss who received tickets from a client. And remember I'm not a Bush supporter. It's more a common sense or discretionary issue here.

Perhaps a better way to have approached it was to decline the offer to attend the rally.

He was only working there for 5 months and he pissed off a generous client with good connections, I would have fired him too unless he was a very good asset to the company. He was at the event as a company representative, embarrassing and disrespecting a client like that is very uncalled for, especially when it's an advertising firm.

I would find this a lot more worrying...

"Last month, Charleston City Council apologized to two protesters arrested for wearing anti-Bush T-shirts to the president's July 4 rally. "

Start? They started this years ago - and do control votes thru corrupt slush funds - it's called a "democracy" in the US.

This protection of Bush's image in not allowing others to speak against "God's little helper" is in itself corrupt and not limited to the sacking of an ad man.

The FBI have already visited the homes of one hell of a lot of people and "advised" them it's not a good idea to show any "opposition' to God. If that happened in a real democracy, folks would fall over laughing and maybe some conspiracy charges for perverting something would be pending.

I can't wait to see the fuck up over election figures this time around... amusing if not so pathetic.

He was not fired for having a political view that the company did not agree with. He was fired for embarrassing what was obviously an important client. I'm sure you'd love it if an employee of yours was pissing off your clients and by doing so ,sending them elsewhere.

Yeah I hear you, and as I mentioned it might have been good to check it ahead of time or something. Also for all we know, his boss argued on his behalf for 5 hours with the client. We dont know from the article. Coulda been a 2 minute call and his boss followed through, coulda been 10 hour discussion and boss reluctantly agreed. No telling from that article.

You also cant tell from the article if the client was a first timer with no future contracts. We're all assuming it was a make or break client, among other things. It's still disturbing, but less than it could be for instance if he was a 10 year employee in excellent standing rather than a 5 month loser, lol.

I like to be succinct when possible. The majority of your posts are more than ridiculous and "more than ridiculous" equals pig shit.

Na.. don't bother.. I ain't got time for your crap just now. All of the above is valid and is/has happened recently. This is not limited to the above, but extends to other areas - another example of the "anti Bush" t-shirts was just given.

Your imbecile comments are "ridiculous".

Go stuff some of that pig shit up your all your holes and enjoy!

No, it shouldn't apply here. If I have an employee that I want to fire for upsetting a client, I should have that right. If I want to fire him for farting loud, that's my right as a business owner.

Sounds to me like he was fired for having a political view. The company that supplied the tickets obviously were Bush supporters or they wouldnt have had the tickets. Simply a case of Bush supporters trying to silence the opposition.

I actually DID read the article.. I just like making doom and gloom comments when I wake up.

When I am getting ready for bed I tend to be sillier.

He embarrassed his company, he could have cost them the client. I hate Bush as much as the next guy, but he deserved to be fired.

Read the end of that article though...

Last month, Charleston City Council apologized to two protesters arrested for wearing anti-Bush T-shirts to the president's July 4 rally. The pair were taken from the event in restraints after revealing T-shirts with Bush's name crossed out on the front and the words "Love America, Hate Bush" on the back. Trespassing charges were ultimately dismissed.
Now THAT'S fucked up.
