I Havent Paid My Phone Bill In Months

Anyone have any ideas how this can happen. Here is the story. What would you do:

I have been paying my cell phone bill consecutively for 3 years. Every month its about $60 give or take a few bucks here and there. Anyway, in Februrary this year, I got my phone bill in and it said there was a credit of $350 on my account so the amount owing is ZERO. I knew there was a mistake, so I called in and the representive confirmed there is indeed a $350 credit. I didn't say much about it, but I took his employee number in case of any discrepancies. So, in March, I was expecting my credit to be for about $290(the $350 minus my usual $60 bill), but instead it was for $310. To make a long story short, from February until now, my phone bill has been receiving credit after credit. Its not from me. Would you call the company and TELL them that YOU haven't made these payments, or keep your mouth shut and continue on? Keep in mind, I called them the first month, and the employee VERIFIED that there was a large overpayment made by someone..(it just wasnt me). What would you do??

I would put the money that you would have paid aside just in case, and switch carriers as soon as your contract is up, lol. If nothing's said at that time, go shopping!

Ha, good idea. I know most people would keep their mouth shut about it. I have kept every invoice they have sent me with a credit on it, so later on, they cannot come back and say they made a mistake. I wont have to pay the money, but I have this little voice in my head telling me to fess up..I dunno. Its saving me a lotta money though..lol

I definately do too..but you can look at this in two ways..either karma will come back and bite me in the ass for this later, or KARMA is paying me back for all the good things I have done so far. I've been weighing which one it is...lol

LOL! A reward? Don't expect a reward from a phone company. Most likely, they will charge you for all the credited months.

You should tell them before they find out you got credited by mistake because they are going to bill you one day or another. And that's going to be one big phone bill.

I dont really think they CAN bill me for the credited months. I have every invoice that they have sent me with CREDIT on it. Also, when I called in to confirm the credit put on my account, I got the representitives employee # incase of something like this.

I'm not sure about the statement that most people would keep their mouth shut.. I have more faith in people than that to be "good".

I went to my bank once because they showed a deposit of $1.75 in my account that I didnt make. They searched for it and it turned out it was a bank error, and they let me keep it. I made sure that it couldnt bite my ass in the future somehow anyway, then thanked them.

I used to work for a company that sold long distance service, and as a manager I got a $5 credit off my long distance every month. I called them and told them I no longer work for the company, but I continue to get the credit to this day anyway.

I'd be putting the money aside every month like said above.. I'd probably have told them on the initial phone call that I didnt make a $350 payment, but I'll take it as long as it can't hurt me someday down the road.

Just imagine a helpful son or daughter calling in payments once a month for their old grandmother so she can have a phone everymonth.. she could go to use it and it's turned off... Now go do the right thing

the phone company might put 2 and 2 together, but who knows.

Interesting...can't say as Karma has ever paid me back for doing something good by having me lie and steal.

Would be different if you received the credit with "past overpayments of your bill" or something like that for a reason...

what do you have to lose? i wouldn't tell them - besides going through all the trouble of removing it will cost way over $350 in administrative fees (that they will bill you for). Telco and karma doesn't fit.

Of course they dont hesitate.. thats part of the plan you signed up for, lol. Dont try to justify it like that, you chose them after all. hehehe.

So just BS them a bit and call and say your sister or someone has been covering it, but you're back in town and want to confirm past payments..

Karma doesnt reward you by giving you something you should pay for lol. I would call speak to a manager and get it settled. THere is nothing worse than they figure it out in a year and hit you with a monster bill.

what he said...

I once had a deposit of $1k extra in my bank account so I didn't say anything for a month and then I felt guilty so I called the bank and had them check it out. The teller had put someone elses $$ in my account. I couldn't imagine if that happened to me...

Newsflash: Most phone company employees dont HAVE employee numbers. And even if they DO, they do NOT have to give a real one to you.

I used to make one up as I went along. I would write it down as I said it so I could repeat it if I had to.
But it was fake and meant shit.

MCI employees NEVER give out their employee number and I doubt other companies are any different.

So this number you keep leaning on is probably FAKE.

Honesty is the best policy. I agree with the poster who mentioned 'karma'. When you do good things, I've found that the universe gives you good things back, and then some.

Someone probably is mistyping their account number when sending in their payments (probably did it once via online banking, and never had to re-enter the info).

i have a huge guilt complex, i was born with a conscience that makes me feel bad about pretty much everything i do. i feel guilty still from stealing from the candy store when I was 10.

BUT.................. when it comes to telephone companies, cable companies, gas companies, banks, insurance companies, credit card companies ......FUCK THEM FOR ALL YOU CAN!!! THEY ARE THE BIGGEST THIEVES OF ALL!!!

feel no guilt Sarah. if it was something like a clothing store you bought stuff on credit from and this happened i'd tell you to do the right thing and tell them you have been credited wrongly.

I thought about that..I checked with my bank too to see if the phone company took the money outta my account (I used to pay them direct deposit outta my account every month) and that never happened either. Im stumped. But every month, someone keeps paying my bill. Its weird.

the judgement call on that one hasn't been made yet - i make those calls when i meet someone in person and although i've been in the same crowds as you i've never really talked to you in person before.

the title lead me to believe you may be, but this is gfy and all isn't what it seems- i admit I was too lazy to read what you wrote so i'm still undecided and not withstanding what you wrote i wouldn't make that judgement call till having some face time with you to make a proper assesment.

I agree! This is what integrity is called. If you had the opportunity to do something (that you really wanted to do) behind someones back and nobody in the whole world would ever find out......would you? If you found a wallet with 300 bucks in it and it had a drivers license with address etc... would you return it?? That is what makes you a loyal, honest person at the end of the day. What choices you make when nobody is looking.

Since something like this has occured to me on more than one occassion, and in my life two rules always prevail.
1. No good deed goes unpunished.
2. Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong, and fuck me at the worst time.
I of course opted to track down why in the hell I was getting what I thought was free money credited to one of my accounts. I would request copies of all payments including copies of checks etc. until I found out how and why this happened.
More often than not it always came back to the same damn reason, it was never a mistake, nobody paid for me, and yes the money was mine. The most common reason's being that at some point either overcharged me at some point and then found the error and credited me, or #1 reason when I opened the account they took a deposit that was to be held for so long and after I paid my bill ontime every month for 2 or so years they refunded it to me in the form of a credit.

Sarah ask yourself this:

If you were to suddenly find out after six months or so, that you'd been paying somebody else's phone bill .. And they had in fact just let it go on. How would you feel about that? What if the phone company told you that you still owed for YOUR bill after paying somebody elses?

The phone company isn't going to eat up the difference. They're going to nail the person who is mistakenly paying the wrong bill. It's probably a typo on somebody's online payment setup.

There IS the possibility that the phone company is just making the same error over and over. I just think it's MORE likely that it's somebody, a real person, who simply hasn't noticed.

Hey you never know? Look at Punker Barbie she got fools wanting to have her paint with her naked body! i think paying your cell phone is a little more reasonble! But hey who cares accept the payment until it goes away. It is not your job to watch their mistakes. Worst case scenario, just call them and tell em you want to check on the forms of payment for your last 5 invoices. Tell them you have been on a drug binge or just highly intoxicated for a few months! If it is credit card the owner is protected, and if it is cash what are they gonna do? they are gonna keep it and bill you. Whats the point in that! Just enjoy it! Oh and you are quite Hott, I might add!

Personally, I'd make 1 call to inquire about it and correct the error. You did that. Not your fault they didn't want to listen to you.
