Would you give 5 years of your life for a million dollars?

You'd wake up one morning and have a million in the bank, but you'd be 2 years older. Would you do it? I wouldn't.

Discuss. What is life worth?

No.
However I love the way "Would you give 5 years of your life for a million dollars?" would make me 2 years older

the post said 5 years... some friends and I discussed this once.

But we posed this question instead:

If you could make a deal with the devil for 100 billion dollars, but in 5 years you would die without reason or warning. But the money and everything you achieved with it would remain...would you do it? Would you give up your life in 5 years for 100 billion dollars now?

I think any sane person would have to say yes. Think of the things you could do for the world, for the poor, for your family in those 5 years, you would die a hero and a legend to be remembered forever if you did it right. What do you think? what would be your decision if the dark one himself stepped forth out of the shadows at this very moment and proposed this to you?

By that logic, hell yes I'd do it. What says I'll be here tomorrow, much less 5 years from now. I'd be a happy miser for at least a moment, anyway.

Maybe I'm not old enough to appreciate life, but since I'm too materialistic, I'd take it.

There's more than one math?

Not talking subsets here, but the general terminology for mathematics is math. Singular.

Hey, this is the "can't-do-math-nor-can-I-speak-grammatically-correct-english" thread. I love it.

And remember, inequality is part of life. You cant cure world poverty because what you give to one person you take away from another. If you suddenly have "100 billion dollars" it doesn't mean the world is better off in any way; but everybody else's dollars are worth a little less.

You cant tell me that pulling poor families out of a world of shit is making the world less of a place to live. With 100 billion dollars you could industrialize small third world nations, change the way and quality of life for millions of people, inequality is only a way of life for ignorant greedy people with more money than they could spend in a lifetime and a lack of creativity or intelligence to do something good with it while they are here. The world is full of em sadly, but if given the opportunity to step into those shoes I think I would do something decidedly different.

First, let me say that it would be just too hard for me to give up any years of my youth for money. Now, if I were an old coot with my best days behind me, then sure!

Quote:
Ok, let's say you "industrialize" a 3rd world country, who is going to run this country? It takes Nations a varying number of years to reach steady state; you cant simply "reform" a country by injecting cash into it.

And I'd say it's quite the opposite - EQAULITY (not inequality) is the way of life for ignorant people because they fail to see the economic inability to make "everything right". I'd love to see equality, but show me a system that can deliver it. Sooner or later everything will go back to the way it is....And you'll be long dead and gone by then.

Fuck, look at communism - wasn't that supposed to make everybody "equal"? Communist states tend tend to be more impoverished and supressed than their capitalist counterparts.
Are you saying don't try to help because it won't make a difference anyway?

There are people all over the world who want and are asking for help. Saying that not helping them is the same as helping is crazy.

If someone were to build an irrigation system, or school system, or industrial sector in a third world country, with that $100 billion, belive me it would make an immediate and beneficial impact on the entire region. Once they know how to do it for their country, the residents can take that knowledge and show other countires how to do the same. And for less money. Everybody wins.

You would be surprised at how quickly people can learn and adapt to stabilize a country once the resources are made available.

There needs to be more info about what years you are trading for this money. It seems like this favors people who are really old.

If you have already done everything you wanted to do, what's the big deal about losing a couple of years? But, if you are just getting started, then it is not fair to get the same money.

Anyway...

I absolutely agree here. That is why you don't just drop $100 billion in cash in a poor country. Instead, you build capital improvements. Build a highway system. Build water treatment plants. Build a rail system. Build a library system. Build a communications network.

You build things everyone can use and no one can monopolize.

Thats what I was talking about originally but I guess I didnt make myself clear enough. Improve the overall way of life of an entire nation, if you could trade your life in 5 years for that kind of power, would you?

Do the 2 or 5 years come off NOW or at the end of my life? If they came off the end of my life, I'd do it.

Ok, I'm in - where is the money?

Discuss. What is life worth?

Little lost are you asleep for the whole 5 years, if thats the case no.

If I got the money up front. And if I can still do what I do normally. I'll sign on the dotted line. Sure send me the money
