TheMob 06-19-2004 06:46 AM

Would you give 5 years of your life for a million dollars?

You'd wake up one morning and have a million in the bank, but you'd be 2 years older. Would you do it? I wouldn't.

Discuss. What is life worth?

Triple 6 06-19-2004 06:47 AM

your math sucks.

Jakke PNG 06-19-2004 06:47 AM

No.
However I love the way "Would you give 5 years of your life for a million dollars?" would make me 2 years older :)

Shit, I'd do it. As long as it was only 2 years, not 5.

Triple 6 06-19-2004 06:48 AM

anyway... yea i would do it. It would be an investment.

always have to give something to get something these days, in one form or another.

KRL 06-19-2004 06:49 AM

no way

Hell...I'd do it even if it was 5. Not much difference between 28 and 32

StarkReality 06-19-2004 06:51 AM

Who guarantees you that there are still 2 years left on your clock ? I'd never do it !

evl4fun 06-19-2004 06:52 AM

Be a hard choice.....2 years yeah probably. I'm pretty sure I'll make a couple mill in the next 5 though.....so no.

Marcus Aurelius 06-19-2004 06:52 AM

the post said 5 years... some friends and I discussed this once.

But we posed this question instead:

If you could make a deal with the devil for 100 billion dollars, but in 5 years you would die without reason or warning. But the money and everything you achieved with it would remain...would you do it? Would you give up your life in 5 years for 100 billion dollars now?

I think any sane person would have to say yes. Think of the things you could do for the world, for the poor, for your family in those 5 years, you would die a hero and a legend to be remembered forever if you did it right. What do you think? what would be your decision if the dark one himself stepped forth out of the shadows at this very moment and proposed this to you?

David! 06-19-2004 06:52 AM

Giving up 5 years at a rate of $200,000.00 per year...
Are you out of your mind?

polish_aristocrat 06-19-2004 06:53 AM

no

By that logic, hell yes I'd do it. What says I'll be here tomorrow, much less 5 years from now. I'd be a happy miser for at least a moment, anyway. :)

AdultNex 06-19-2004 06:57 AM

Sadly, yes.

Maybe I'm not old enough to appreciate life, but since I'm too materialistic, I'd take it.

There's more than one math?

Not talking subsets here, but the general terminology for mathematics is math. Singular.

Hey, this is the "can't-do-math-nor-can-I-speak-grammatically-correct-english" thread. I love it. :glugglug

And remember, inequality is part of life. You cant cure world poverty because what you give to one person you take away from another. If you suddenly have "100 billion dollars" it doesn't mean the world is better off in any way; but everybody else's dollars are worth a little less.

You cant tell me that pulling poor families out of a world of shit is making the world less of a place to live. With 100 billion dollars you could industrialize small third world nations, change the way and quality of life for millions of people, inequality is only a way of life for ignorant greedy people with more money than they could spend in a lifetime and a lack of creativity or intelligence to do something good with it while they are here. The world is full of em sadly, but if given the opportunity to step into those shoes I think I would do something decidedly different.

Mr Pheer 06-19-2004 07:04 AM

give up 5 years of life for a couple years income? no fucking way

*edited for spelling error*
apparently, this thread makes everyone that reads it, pretty fuckin stupid

LadyMischief 06-19-2004 07:04 AM

Heheh..this is true. :1orglaugh

Platinumpimp 06-19-2004 07:21 AM

I wouldn't, but I guess it just depends on who you are asking.

kak_azn 06-19-2004 07:21 AM

Everybody would do it! Their's more to life then money but I guess I only say that because I anit got any!

woodsix 06-19-2004 07:39 AM

First, let me say that it would be just too hard for me to give up any years of my youth for money. Now, if I were an old coot with my best days behind me, then sure!

Quote:

Ok, let's say you "industrialize" a 3rd world country, who is going to run this country? It takes Nations a varying number of years to reach steady state; you cant simply "reform" a country by injecting cash into it.

And I'd say it's quite the opposite - EQAULITY (not inequality) is the way of life for ignorant people because they fail to see the economic inability to make "everything right". I'd love to see equality, but show me a system that can deliver it. Sooner or later everything will go back to the way it is....And you'll be long dead and gone by then.

Fuck, look at communism - wasn't that supposed to make everybody "equal"? Communist states tend tend to be more impoverished and supressed than their capitalist counterparts.
Are you saying don't try to help because it won't make a difference anyway?

There are people all over the world who want and are asking for help. Saying that not helping them is the same as helping is crazy.

If someone were to build an irrigation system, or school system, or industrial sector in a third world country, with that $100 billion, belive me it would make an immediate and beneficial impact on the entire region. Once they know how to do it for their country, the residents can take that knowledge and show other countires how to do the same. And for less money. Everybody wins.

You would be surprised at how quickly people can learn and adapt to stabilize a country once the resources are made available.

Would you also give 10 years for 20 million?
20 years for 40 million?
60 years for 120 million?

where would you guys stop?

fudpuck 06-19-2004 09:17 AM

I gave 4 years one time for most of a million, and it never paid off.

I should have started with a better guarantee.

187 06-19-2004 09:18 AM

yeah

woodsix 06-19-2004 09:18 AM

There needs to be more info about what years you are trading for this money. It seems like this favors people who are really old.

If you have already done everything you wanted to do, what's the big deal about losing a couple of years? But, if you are just getting started, then it is not fair to get the same money.

Anyway...

I absolutely agree here. That is why you don't just drop $100 billion in cash in a poor country. Instead, you build capital improvements. Build a highway system. Build water treatment plants. Build a rail system. Build a library system. Build a communications network.

You build things everyone can use and no one can monopolize.

mardigras 06-19-2004 09:21 AM

Then the person who turned down this offer was hit by a bus the following day:glugglug

TheWildcard 06-19-2004 09:22 AM

2 Years - Yes
5 Years - No

eiht_98 06-19-2004 10:26 AM

I know I will live 115 years so 5 years is not much if I get 1 mil.

BigVlad 06-19-2004 10:29 AM

Thats what I was talking about originally but I guess I didnt make myself clear enough. Improve the overall way of life of an entire nation, if you could trade your life in 5 years for that kind of power, would you?

Spunky 06-19-2004 10:35 AM

Hell no

eire_eire3000 06-19-2004 10:35 AM

i would do it if i could wait until my daughter turned 18 and was in college.. but right now she's 2, and i wouldnt miss seeing her grow up

Trixie Racer 06-19-2004 11:12 AM

Do the 2 or 5 years come off NOW or at the end of my life? If they came off the end of my life, I'd do it.
