About Frontpage extensions
Still a bit newbie...
What's this about? "Do you want Frontpage installed on your account?" I'm moving to a paid host now and this is in the signup-form. What do they mean? Has this got to do with Frontpage extensions that I read about somewhere? If so, what's that? Help appreciated... Thanks Johan ------------------ Give me 5... thousand hits, please. |

When I started, back in 1997, it was a
very famous thing to use frontpage extensions With that you can easy setup page counters, mailforms, chatrooms, discussions forum, with Frontpage Explorer.. I suggest you use it if you're a newbie and don't know what to use, or you're not able to install a simple CGI on your domain ![]() |

I have heard that having them installed on your server is like an invitation for hackers to bust in, like leaving out the welcome mat
You can get much better free scripts for unix servers, any way, my suggestion do without them ![]() ------------------ Submit Your Galleries GET LISTED INSTANTLY Now Three Great Sites Including SexCreep.Com The Most Controversial Site Ever! |

Donīt order FRONTPAGE EXTENSIONS !
If you use it you can easy load up your pages via MSFP - but FP also creates temp - folders (they need space) and there is a big security hole to get your ftp login . better donīt use it ! |

If you are using Front Page at all, perhaps you should reconsider ...... before its too late.
To answer your question Front Page extensions on your server enable MS FrontPage to upload and manage your site. They also allow script fuctionality for MS on things such as forms and actions. Having the FrontPage extensions installed on your server creates additional folders (_vti). By doing this your site become twice the size it would me normally. File space will be doubled. And yes it does have its prolblems with security, especially if the web server is running Linux. |

FrontPage extensions are really useful, ONLY IF you use Microsoft FrontPage for web development. Makes uploading pages really easy, because you save right to your site.
BUT, it does clutter up a bit with extra folders (which who gives a shit about that) AND, the most important thing is that FrontPage has it's OWN file permissions on your server... so if you create and upload a page using FrontPage, you can't just FTP over it... and if you want to remove FrontPage, you have to have the file permissions all changed. All in all, if you use FrontPage for editing, use the FrontPage extensions, so you get some of the plug and play wizards. But if you don't use FrontPage for web design, you don't need the FrontPage extensions. Remember, though, if you do have the extensions turned on, it's no big deal not to use them. |

I use frontpage, but don't really ever use the extensions, I just like to publish to my hard drive, them upload the site or changes, to my unix servers, but skip the unnecessary files and folders
It has worked so far, pretty well, the best part of frontpage is the seamless integration of site themes into the web It makes graphics design work a snap, once you make the them you can apply it to as many pages in the site as you want and it constructs the buttons, text and graphical links for me ![]() Lazy bastard, I know ![]() ------------------ Submit Your Galleries - Jack Thumbs TGP GET LISTED INSTANTLY Now Four Great Sites to Promote including SexCreep.Com and EighteenSex.Com! |
