OK . I had my sites built by this designer and now since I dont use him anymore... Mind you he has always been paid in full and even advanced rent money when needed... since I dont use him any more he wont tell me how my site works as to remove items, etc. He wants to charge me $100 an hour fee.
Isnt this like buying a car then having to pay extra for the keys. What do I do.

Depends on the site and the nature of the work, simple jobs are always done for free, follow up with a client is mandatory in our book. We are always busy, but always have time to help out a previous client, and many get this for free and they know this.

It's not always about cash, it's doing a good job and making the client happy and we have given away a ton of freebies.

after the project has been approved, you cannot expect any changes for free, unless designer wants to make a favor to you. But anyway 100$ per hour is way to much. Next time look for designer who provides all the source files upon completion. Good luck, i hope you will resolve this issue.

I have seen a lot of this situation on content brokers that doesn't use a decent brokering script.
They just put a width in the html and .. that's it

are you talking about a mysql entry to add stuff, or an actual file structure ?

if you're talking about a file structure, that's easy to find.. actually, it all is... even if it's mysql...

but if it's a file structure and you are trying to find where the folders are, login through ssh or telnet (depending on the host) and do locate filename (filename beeing the name of one file you know is in that dir... say go over the net to that pic or video and copy the filename)

that's for freebsd that I use... I ain't very litterate with webservers, but it works for me over here... maybe someone else can help with other webservers if you don't have freebsd

I might be wrong.... but I am under the impression he calls designer work what a "programmer" did for him...

I never expect a designer to redo work once all is paid and agreed to be done... that'd be using the good will of someone.

BUT, there's something different with programming. if you hire a programmer to build your entire site, and then maintain it, he should let you know how everything works by the time he leaves...

That's why everyone should always know how everything works WHILE someone does it for them... cuz then this shit don't happen.

you come back 6 months later wanting changes, why cant he ask for his hourly rate?

I dont know the rates so 100 could be much, I dont know. but what one values their self or time should be of no issue to anyone who has been privded with the service and product then comes back later for changes.

theres still an issue of what someones time and talent is worth, whether its designs or code.

just my opinion though.
