Social Anxiety
Anyone else here have a problem with it? I know alot of you don't because I see alot of pics of parties and shit. I would love to be able to do that, I'm completly unable to talk to anyone new. This shit is absolutely crippling me, I can't go to parties,I cant talk to women at all, and it's been forever since I got some pussy
It's even more pathetic because my son stays with me and I can't take him anywhere cuz I freak out. It's gotten to the point to where I'm afraid to go outside and get the paper and check the mail, I can't tell you the last time I went anywhere other than work, daycare, or home Anyone here dealt with this or know anyone who has..... what the fuck can I do? I feel so pathetic |

Have you tried the prescription medicine for it? It's worked well for a friend of mine.

Many webmasters have that condition. Its probably occupationally-related.
My suggestion, vary your routine and ALWAYS call friends/relatives so human interaction skills are not eroded. |

I appreciate the responses but the alcahol thing wont work, every time I have been drinking I get violently ill... I think I'm alergic or something.
As for calling people to keep my social skills, those are long since gone and I'm scared to death that they are never coming back I wasnt aware there was a perscription med out there to treat this. I guess I will have to find a shrink to fix me up, although I really dont want to admit to anyone off the internet that I'm all fucked up in the head. Kind of embarasing |

Get some sunlight. You are in Wisconsin and are probably not getting enough sun for Vitamin D to work.

Before you try prescription meds you should buy a book or two on the subject, there are many cognitive therapy techniques which really do help.

if a woman is not available, some therapy and paxil will do the job

Hugh Heffner never goes outside and he seems happy. If you have everything you want inside your house I suppose that is ok.

just to make you feel better i think i have this same problem just not as severe....it's always hard for me to meet new people and i feel uncomfortable around crowds in the business place....i'm fine going out to clubs and hanging around close friends of mine..i also feel uncomfortable talking to a group of people at one time...i always have to only have a conversation with only one person for me to feel comfortable...i really think it has to do with me being on the computer so much and losing touch with reality...i do think it will help to get out more often or even try to talk on the phone alot. i've considered those prescription drugs before, but think the problem isn't too severe to go that far. i just hope it doesnt get worse...the wierd thing is when i drink beer all the inhibitions go away....LOL |

I know how you feel. I get anxious when I go out, too, I dont like people to look at me. Sometimes my eyes get watery when I see someone look at me.

I have social anxiety.
I inherently do not like people I don't know around me.

What you're describing sounds like something which has progressed to the state you're currently suffering from....
There is 'aversion therapy', which you could try yourself..and, it involves a few things. 1. Go stand outside your front door several times a day. Start with a minute and increase the time by a minute or two every week. Then, increase the distance from your front door to the street. 2. Think about what happened and when a particular incident occurred in your life and timeline it to when you started feeling paranoid and socially unacceptable. Once you've timelined the progression, it's easier to pinpoint when this got so bad that you don't want to go anywhere and you think people are judging you. You, my friend, are headed toward a condition called paranoia and agoraphobia and you need to be treated. While anti anxiety drugs may help short term...at least, long enough to get you into a car and to a counselor or shrink, they will not cure the problem you have. From what I'm reading here, there is real fear....which can be crippling. Run, do not walk, to your nearest health center and talk to someone. Confidentiality is far greater in a shrink's office than on this board. Good luck to you.

Paxil is the only known cure.
Xanax is taken for regular 'anxiety' but can temporarily help in social anxiety situtations...

Corporal - I'm right there with you, bro! I had an anxiety attack a little over a month ago and got some really great advice from some of the fine folks here. I feel almost 100% better now following some of their simple suggestions and it really has changed my life in a positive way. A lot of webmasters are stricken with anxiety because our jobs don't really involve human involvement or contact.
Here are a couple things I did that helped out A LOT! 1. I got a prescription of .50mg Xanax. If you use the proper dosage of .25mg right when you wake up, then it will seriously help balance you out. I always looked at Xanax like a party drug but when used in the proper dosages, it's a life saver. I haven't taken it for about two weeks but I keep it around in case I feel that panic coming back. 2. Get out. Even if it's out front in your yard or to the store. Get out and get around people. The more you are, the more you understand that there's nothing wrong with you. 3. Baby steps...remember that. You're not going to overcome this problem overnight. You understand what's going on right now and you're aware of your condition. That is step 1. Now that you know what's wrong, start taking baby steps into getting it corrected. You can't conquer Rome in a day. Keep your head up and keep telling yourself that there's nothing wrong with you. You'll be fine and if you ever need help or info. you can contact me. Stick in there, bro. It can only get better now.

And, studies are connecting both Paxil and Prozac to increased suicide. I doubt, highly, it's a direct relationship to the drugs themselves....rather, I think there is a diminishing return from taking these drugs long term. Without fixing the problem that got the individual into the pit in the first place, these drugs will eventually stop plugging the leak.

I have been diagnosed with social anxiety and you all are way overrating Paxil. If your social anxiety is severe like mine was chances are Paxil will not help. You may need a stronger class of drugs known as MAOi's. With MAOi's unfortunately there are certain foods you cannot eat and side effects are sometimes less tolerable than a Paxil or Xanax.
I have been taking Nardil for 2 years and it is the only drug that has helped with my social anxiety. I suggest you read this website for more information: http://www.socialfear.com/ Only people with social anxiety knows how it truly feels to have it. It has nothing to do with being to shy or anything stupid like that...... It effects just about everything you do and can be a very paralyzing problem to continue living like that. |

My wife suffered from panic attacks, It started slowly she was feeling stressed but not too bad. She had always been fun loving and care free, it was comming on so slowly that nobody noticed .
One day while she was out she got a terrible panic attack, people called 911 thinking she was having a heart attack(she thought the same as well). She got some counciling and tried a few meds nothing was really working too well until she tried Paxil. The Paxil had her back to her old self, did'nt make her stoned just made her feel balanced. She is still on it and is back to feeling "normal". Paxil may not work for everybody but in her case it works wonders. Just realize that you are not alone, take the advise of the people here, you WILL get better if you take the proper steps . Good Luck |
