Next month I'm making my first trip ever to LA (infact its my first trip to California) .. I'll only be there for a long weekend, but I'd like to catch as much as I can .. what are some of your favorite "Must Not Miss" places in LA?

Find a taco shop and get a carne asada burrito. One of the best foods ever. I used to live by a taco shop and got them all the time. I moved out of the ghetto though so now there's no nearby taco shops.
![]() Shit now I crave a nice thick and juicy carne asada burrito smothered with salsa fresca and guacemole...

Taco stands -- totally concur. The sit-down joints don't suck either -- my fave is El Coyote up on Beverly (or is it 3rd?)...
Other eats: * Tommy's for a greasy double chili cheeseburger/hangover reliever * Pink's (La Brea @ Melrose) for the best damn hot dogs on the coast Other do's: * Walk along the boardwalk on Venice Beach * Hike Runyon Canyon * Fuck all the touristy crap like Dizzyland and Universal Studios * Stay away from the malls <br> |

Venice boardwalk and Santa Monica Pier aren't bad, Rodeo Drive for shopping (or hahahahahaha shopping), if it's warm and you want to spend the afternoon doing nothing, go to Manhattan Beach and chill out, and there are a lot of great restaurants out here. You could go to downtown LA on Saturday morning to the fashion district for shopping... grab a meal at one of the Ivy restaurants (hollywood or santa monica) but be prepared to pay 26 bucks for a hamburger... the Getty Museum... |

Butrflied, tell us what you like? I hate it when friends and relatives come to Los Angeles and expect me to show them around, and they don't tell me what they really want to do.
What KB described sounds like "The Graveline Tours." http://www.beverlyhillstourism.com/english/tours.htm It may sound corny, but the most fun I ever had was on this tour. If you are interested in the beach, go to Venice Boardwalk like others metnioned. Also, jump on a boat in Marina del Rey and take a boat tour of the area. Jump on a helicopter and go to Catalina. Go to Watts and see the Watts Tower. If you don't take the Hollywood/Beverly Hills Graveline Tour, then get into a car and drive down Sunset Boulevard from Hollywood to the Beach. Have lunch in Malibu at one of the beachfront restaurants. Go to an outside concert like the Greek. Go to a Dodger or Lakers' game, or check out the Hollywood Racetrack. Go to a TV show and watch it live like Leno or any number of talk shows or game shows. Go to Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard. You always see celebrities there. Check out some of the jazz clubs. Want old Hollywood? Check out Musso Frank's restaurant, in Hollywood, and go to downtown LA and visit ex-mayor Riordan's Restaurant. (what's the name?--it is the oldest restaurant in LA and it never closes iits doors?) Visit Olvera Street for authentic Mexican Food and lots of atmosphere. But if you could take an extra couple of days, you are a fool if you don't drive up the coast from LA to SF. San Francisco is where you should go. It makes Los Angeles look like a flatland ghetto, which it really is! DA COAST, DA COAST...........DRIVE TO SAN FRANCISCO |

The Original Pantry is open 24 hours and located in downtown Los Angeles. It is a great place to stop for a bite after a Laker's game at the Staples Center. The Pantry is at its best for breakfast where the portions are large and the service fast and friendly. Ex-Mayor Richard Riordan owns The Pantry so it is a natural that politicians meet there for power breakfast meetings. The meals are American diner food at bargain prices. Be sure to bring cash because they don't accept credit cards.
877 S. Figueroa St - at 9th St Downtown LA 213 972-9279 Breakfrast for two: Less than $15 Entrees: $5-15 The Pantry is the first restaurant I visited when I came to LA. It was crowded, and you had to sit at tables with strangers, sorta like Benihana's. The steak I ordered was the largest piece of meat I have ever seen on a plate. |

If your into the night club scene, I have hookups at White Lotus.
White Lotus Let me know if you want to go, and how many and I will get you on the list and make sure they take care of you. Access Hollywood and VH1 rated it number one club in California.

My best suggestion to you is to play it by ear, after all, who wants to spend their vacation running around trying to cram so much into it you don't really enjoy it?
If it's nice out and you like the beach, hang in Venice or Manhattan for the day, or maybe Hermosa... If you want to go out and party and sleep late, pick a couple good clubs and do that... If you want tours, do a little research and pick one for each day you're out here... One of my friends was out from Phoenix last weekend and all we did was hang out in Venice (I live here so that's a good reason we stayed around here) -- did some kayaking out of the marina and at the beach, did a little shopping on the boardwalk, a couple bike rides around the immediate area, and spent plenty of time hanging out and relaxing, since the last time she was out here it was for mine and Aly's bday party weekend and all we pretty much did was go out that weekend. |

Kimmy's right play it by ear.
KB is also right, Roscoes Chicken and Waffles is a must. The Hollywood & Gower location is the best bet. Like Jimmy said check out Yamashiro's in the Hollywood Hills. It's pretty good multi-Asian food but the view is absolutely awesome. If you don't want the view but just want a bit of Chinese check out Genghis Cohens. 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica on a Saturday afternoon is always a favorite. Then you can hit the pier at dusk and watch the Sunset. Universal Citywalk has a bunch of cool bars and such that aren't too touristy. It's a cool spot to see. Make sure you try to upgrade to a convertible car. Click here for a free Hertz upgrade. What's a trip to LA without a side order of sunshine (and smog)!

Alien, that is such a funny but true comment about the earthquake. The first time my sister visited me, there was a large quake...the largest I had ever experienced and the first for my sister. She still tells the earthquake story to her friends. There was a potted ficus plant beside her bed. When the quake hit, the plant fell on her bed and she thought she was being attacked. I heard her scream from down the hall, and when I got to her, she was pinned against her bed by the big plant.
She has never forgotten LA. All the nice restaurants, tours, and celebrity sightings couldn't compare to the *QUAKE!* |
