Most american weapons are like that. The F15 also sucks, if compared with the Russian Sukhoi 35, but it seems ultra-powerful flying at very high speed and height in Afghanistan.

Yup, in 2001-02 over 80% were badly damaged by ground fire.

An additional problem is that when firing the Hellfire missiles, fragments can fly into the rotors damaging them. To combat this, the pilots have been told to fire missiles only from the right-side pylon.

The craft have also proved themselves unsuitable for desert operations, they require repair and maintenance in a ratio greater than 2:1 for hours of flight.

Also have to remember these were designed to fight WWIII in Europe, not the deserts of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Couple other points to ponder, a new Apache is about $50 million a pop, a Russian Hind-24 Gunship can be bought for about $3 million a pop and were overdesigned to fight in just about any climate. Asymmetric warfare with Buck Rogers whiz bang hardware just isn't going to work in the long run.

Exactly. The Russians had a nasty time of it when they invaded Afghanistan, they took some serious beatings there, even with their mega attack copters and heavy equipment. I'd say the US and coalition forces have faired far better both in Afghanistan AND in Iraq.

Proper protection would be flying Cobra's or 64's with them convoys.

I served in the army myself a long time and have a quite good clue of things like that, but what I'm trying to say is that paved roads don't get blocked by mines, coz they are too visible. But if a road is the one and only chance of passing a minefield left and right of the road you probably take the road and not the minefield don't you?!

Thats where it was hit.

No RPG could do that unless it was hit exactly at the top rear.

If RPG was fired on level with the tank there is very little chance of it gettin taken out, nearly impossible.

Top rear is very weak in armor thus why the turret is extended in the M1 design.

M1 is an awesome tank but when it does not have proper support in a bad position on a field its a sitting duck.

If tactics were done properly, the juncture's to enter the urban area would have been leveled enough for forces to enter safely, possible vantage points would have been knocked down.

There should be NOTHING around that tank as far as buildings, over passes at least for 1/2 mile...

When you have a determined enemy that can live on nothing, fighting a guerilla war for their homeland and prepared to die for it versus an occupying army made up of kids used to a soft life and don't give a shit on the outcome. Who are you going to back?

All the technology will win you a conventional war, that took a few weeks. Now you have occupation and guerilla resistance and that's harder.

To the hardliners, going in and wiping out whole towns does not work, Nazis, Russians, Africans, Serbs, Americans all tried it and it fails. Just build resistance and hatred. Plus will the world stand by and allow the the US to do it?

But something hard for a lot of people to comprehend is that the U.S will most likely not always be the worlds most powerful nation, there are other powers in the world with far greater potiential and many say that the U.S is already beginning it's own ( very gradual, perhaps ) decay.
