Getting into martial arts have become quite a craze. I know a few people who are into kick boxing. I think I'll join a class one of these days.

Done a few different syles but My husband's really got me into Aikido.
We're going to be taking lessons with a sensei here who is 6th Dan - same level as Steven Segal.
Anyone with a higher Dan has been personally trained by the founder of aikido.
so basically - he's liek right up there with the best.

I liek aikido because Im very small 5'2"
I dont have a lot of weight to throw around - so it's better for me to use a style which uses opponents momentum against them

I started to but I felt ridiculous bowing whenever I entered and left the dojo.

I just wanted to learn how to do cool flips and shit but that takes years so I was like fuck that, and I stopped.

I took Judo for 6 years as a kid. I'll probably go back after I get my 1st degree in Tae Kwon Do, which should be in May. I've been ready to test for years now, but its hard to find a good school that isn't throwing a belt at me because I'm bitchslapping their current blackbelt stock. It's not that I'm super good, it's just that Tae Kwon Do is rife with shitty schools and instructors. Took submission fighting for awhile as well, however it was more about egos and being a tough guy than the traditional martial arts qualities of humility and respect so I quit.... also my work asked me to stop due to the constant facial injuries.

In the end, martial arts are like types of guns. They all have their purposes, strengths and weaknesses... none are perfect for every scenario. You don't snipe with a pistol, you don't use a bolt action in a driveby, and you don't pull out the bazooka in the subway. It's the quality of the weapon, the quality of instruction, that will define its innate worth.

Untrained people seem to think grappling/jiu jitsu is the be all/end all of martial arts training, but not when fighting multiple opponents. Locking up with one guy just means his two buddies get free, easy shots on you. In that case, a focus on striking ala muay thai or tae kwon do will serve best.

No art is really better or worse than any other art, just a matter of what suits you, and how good the instruction is.

In the real world, highly trained fighters dont face off in the streets like Mortal Kombat. You'll be fighting untrained people. Sofa Ninjas that say Xstyle can beat Ystyle are only skilled in the art of unrealistic futility.

I guess, I met both worlds

This is very true, don't be stubborn and just learn one style. You need to learn multiple styles in order to be a better fighter, self defense or just out of the love of martial arts. (learn the ground game, plus the obvious stand up.)

2 Years of Aikido
2 years of Judo
1 year of Muay Thai
1 and a half of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Aikido is bullshit, unrealistic in the street. No one who attacks you is going to be like an UKE in the dojo. I did knife defenses this past saturday with some friends, one showing the techniques, disarming them. second, them resisting. I got stabbed every time they resisted. So much for that. 2 years wasted, and I was 2 away from Black, at 2nd Kyu.

Judo is and always be awesome. Being able to throw someone is a plus, more realistic than anything else, plus it is live sparring.

Muay Thai is the best standup fighting style, bar none.

BJJ, if you dont' train for the ground, you are fucked. I trained at the Gracie Academy under Rorion Gracie for a year, now under Megaton Diaz, a Rickson Gracie Black.

Your chances of being fucked up in a real life fight INCREASES the less you train alive. Alive meaning against a FULLY RESISTING OPPONENT.

Good luck to everyone, if you train to have fun, disregard what I just posted.

I took Wushu (KunFu) for a few months, really enjoyed it, had to stop because I went in for knee surgery and then had to wait for my knee to get strong again. Its in better shape now so I was thinking of taking something up again.

Had a few years of karate before that, but I'm looking for something more practical.

so true...live sparring is the best preparation for live combat one on one.
Royler Gracie Jui-Jitsu for about a year... my favorite move is the toe hold from the half-guard position.

I can usually take down my opponent, proceed to a full mount and pound the living day lights out of him. I have went up against other martial artistist and submitted them in less than ten minutes. The only people I have trouble beating up or submitting are wrestlers. Anyway, Brazilian Jui-Jitsu, if you want to beat up people in reality is the way to go. Anythnig else is just to show off

No Martial Art is better than one another. However, I'll have to

agree... Muai Thai and Jujitsu is the complete package.
