I got a $6,000 check from an e-mail scam!

Yep.. I fell for this one.. but only a little.. it was the one where you deposit their check then send them a wire transfer after depositing the check.

I suspected fraud right from the beginning.. but was curious .. I mean $6,000 has to make anyone a little curious.. and one other thing.. they responded to an ad I posted selling some stereo equipment, offering me $6,000 for something I was asking $2,500 for and explained the rest was for the shipper that I was to pay when they came to pick up the speakers. It alsmost seemed legit the way they explained it. So what I did was I told them to go ahead and send me the check.. they sent me one... I took it to the bank.. and they almost let me deposit it.. but then I asked them to investigate it and sure enough it was bogus.

The thing that made this so believeable was my ad for the speakers.. so when they responded, I didn't think much of it as I'd had many responses already.

I don't mind admiting I almost got taken by this scam.. I gotta admit it's a pretty good one : /

That's not a good scam, and you don't mind admitting almost falling for that?

It was a good scam digipimp.. I get scams in my mail 100 times a day.. I know one when I see it.. but this one played on the fact that I was selling something.. it was about 8 months ago, and after investigating it I found that I wasn't the only one to think it was true

The reason I don't mind admitting it is because it happened.. and I'm a smart person

it's good that there are people that can admit they fall, or neraly fall for a scam, that way they can keep others from falling in the same trap!

thanks for sharing graphicsbytia

that's exactly why I posted this Nat

There seems to be a "don't admit the truth" theme around here, I see it all the time.. threads on business being down for example, guarantee you'll have at least 50 people jump in and disagree .. I gotta tell you.. when I see this, it makes me wary.. I tell things how they are period.. let the haters do their thing.. I'll do mine

BTW, I got that email with a job posting - (edit) through (edit)Monster.com.
What intrigued me what how they were targetting people looking for jobs. Anyhow, I put their 'human resources' through the wringer with 2000 questions. She stopped answering. The difference was you are a representative of the company - you collect payments from their 'clients' deposit in your business account and you send them 80% or 70% of the cash.

I didn't get scammed - I was interested in how this scam works so I could report it.

Authorities don't care about scams, they get more publicity prosecuting people for having an online adult novelty shop.

This is an old ass scam.. It's not a good one any more.. If someone sends you a check and they want you to send money back thats a god damn red flag.. They did this with cars back in the day, and they do it with plenty of other stuff.. If people let common sense provail instead of greed they would see it right away..

doesn't really matter how old it is media, and it's a good one to anyone who hasn't seen it before.

no, but I didn't deposit it.. what I did was had them check it while I was there because I did some checking on this before I went to the bank. The place I found out about the scam was the site I was trying to sell the speakers on, they had letters from other people who these people had contacted also asking them to do the same thing.

The thing that got me was .. the bank was willing to let me deposit the check.. if I hadn't said anything.. it would have been deposited and I could have sent a wire to these people before it cleared with no problem at all.. scary

Haha. I don't think I'd fall for that one. Hell, I wouldn't take a check for $6k for anything I was selling anyway. Fuck checks. Money order, cashier's check, credit card, or cash.

I learned a little tip a long time ago, but never got to try it...

when depositing a third party check, write:

"Without Recourse"

above your signature, that means that if the check bounces, they Have to go after the check writer... not you. It's some legal mumbo jumbo that protects your account from fraudulent checks.

very true. my mother was scammed out of almost $100k along with some of her business associates. the feds wont look into since it's not over $100k, but we have local PD, private I and 2 lawyers after it. This guy will more than likely get away with it, too.

Do a search on Google or Yahoo! for "Nigeria counterfit check scam". here are a couple of links. They tried to screw me out of $55.000 but I didn't fall for it.
