Future of the internet
what do you think the future for the internet will hold ? I personally believe the major companies like Time Warner, Cox and so on.. will control the net as they do the current TV..
Once the bandwidth limits are no longer limits for real time broadcasting.. I think these companies will provide multi media boxes that you will browse the internet and watch TV on.. I think the TV stations will merge into major media outlets, maybe something in the format as what AOL is.. but 100's of these sites with their own programming, that will be bought as subscription service much like cable TV subscription works now.. Of course there would still be the internet but I think as technology advances these companies will take more and more control of the internet. what are your thoughts on the future of the internet?

In case you didn't know, it used to cost per minute to use a land line telephone like a cellphone does now. There are still parts of the US and alot of the EU that still charges per minute.

I think we learned that cable/telecom companies do not mix well with content. AOL-Time Warner was a disaster and Comcast/Disney will be as well if it goes through. Companies should learn to stick to what they do well.
Will the future of the internet be comprised of several large monopolistic companies controlling everything? No. The beauty of the internet is the fact that any (and every) shmuck with a text editor and an ftp client can participate. This was never a factor with television. Besides, for the most part the internet is controlled by several large companies. Luckily, there leash is short because it has to be. AOL, MSN, and as JDog said UUNet all control a lot. Actually most companies use UUNet?s infrastructure (AOL included). |

In terms of maturity and growth, think of the internet as a spoiled brat. It's not an infant anymore and needs to grow up. And so do webmasters, they're doing their best to drive people away from the Internet.
