TMJ..anyone familiar witht his?

Is anyone familair with this thing called TMJ? Its when your jaw pops alot (like when your crack your knuckles)

Its been happening to me lately and its weird. i was hoping some of you could shed some light on this. What do they do to correct this?

I know that if you let it go for to long, you can end up with braces that have rubberbands connecting the top and bottom of your jaw, or even worse...you will have to get your mouth wired shut.

How does something like TMJ happen and how can you prevent it?

I dont do it on purpose. I yawn and it pops. I talk and it pops. Its the oddest thing. Sometimes it even makes my left ear hurt.

My mother told me that when I was about 3, I grabbed my ear and started screaming. Apparently I somehow got a hole in my inner eardrum. Go figure. The fixed it, and I never had a proble again....until now. It doesnt hurt all the time, but whenever I get that one really loud har dpop from my jaw, it starts to hurt.

Tempromandibular Joint Disorder or TMJ is and can be a serious medical problem. I would suggest doing some research and perhaps finding a specialist in your area. Your GP should be able to give you a referral. Here are a few websites with some more information for you.

Good luck!

No it cant be that. i am very anal about my teeth. i go to the dentist every few months. I brush, floss and use mothwas serveral times a day. If you were to go through my purse, you'd find a travel size toothbrush, toothbaste, floos and mouthwash. I guess you can say I am anal compulsive lol.

I have heard that it can be from biting or grinding your teeth too. If so, then thats it right there. Sometime when I sllep, I bite down real hard. Im not sure why. Maybe I should try a bite plate?

I have TMJ though it comes and goes....I looked into seeing a doctor about it but since it hasn't bothered me for a couple of years i didn't bother.

most people get it by grinding their teeth while sleeping - though not everyone does....

your dentist could probably recommend someone for you to go see.

I found out I have tmj disorder at the age of 25 and I am now 39. I can tell you all about it. I have a very rare case with arthritis in my jaw joints and mucsle damage to my head and neck.

1. You need to see an dentist that specializes in the disorder to see if your bite is correct.

2. a splint that they make for you will take the pressure off your jaw at night and let your muscles heal.

IF you are a grinder, a dentist can determine that you do grind. It is a myth that everyone that has tmj disorder grinds. I don't grind.

It is also a myth that it is just a stress disorder. Sometimes just get braces will correct the majority of the symptoms of tmj disorder.

I am going out of town til tomorrow night but feel free to email me at [email protected] or [email protected] if you have any other questions.

Clenching does it too, sometimes worse than grinding, especially if you have strong teeth. Night guard from your dentist is the most efficient solution. Other stuff that can help: reduce stress, stop drinking caffeine, change the position you sleep in, massage your jaw, get your wisdom teeth removed.

Doesnt that just figure? The usually remove those teeth so you DONT experience problems but it turns out that it can make things worse.

Before you go to a GP doctor or a dentist who recommends a mouth guard, bands, or even surgery, check out a good Chiropractor.

My step dad had TMJ really bad, to the point he could hardly open his mouth, he tried this. He was better in less than 2 weeks, and it has NEVER come back.

Certain foods will set it off so you should try a soft diet for a day or two as a test to see if it helps.

"Reduce the Amount of Wear and Injury to the Joint

Concentrate on chewing food evenly on both sides of the mouth when eating.
Stop chewing gum or chewing tobacco.
Eat soft foods only. Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky or chewy foods.
Avoid clenching, gritting, and grinding your teeth.
Practice good posture. Hold your head up with your neck and shoulders in good alignment. Begin by standing against a wall with everything from your heels to the back of your head touching the wall. Then step away from the wall and balance a book on the top of your head. Try to walk without having the book fall. Practice this exercise at least twice a day"
http://www.mcg.edu/Otolaryngology/patientTMJ.htm

Gum is a big no no ! hehehe

Change of weather can set it off also. I know mine is worse in the winter time because of the arthritis

One needs their jaw and neck xrayed to see if there is an injury.
If the jaw is not in place for years there can be arthritis and no chiropractor could ever cure that.

Ehh I never chew gum anyway.

The main stuff in my day to day life is all healthy.

For instance..Ill wake up and have a piece of toast and and 4oz. glass of OJ.

In between breakfast and lunch ill have an apple or osmething. Then for lunch ill either have soup, or a sandwich and a glass of milk.

For dinner I have baked chicken with steamed veggies.

I really should cut out the bread though. Carbs are the devil!

Heather ,

Do a search on google for tmj disorder.

People who do not have the disorder may give your incorrect advice ( including medical doctors ) and you don't want this disorder to go any long period without being checked out. It can cause muscle damage and it is not fun to live with.

Most likely you have a minor case but it is better to be safe and have it checked out. IF you are not having problems with your ears like feeling pressure or aching, you are probably have a minor case.

Wow, that totally sucks. Seems downright unfair. I had a bunch of complications from getting my wisdom teeth out, but it did help the TMJ a lot.

Heather, when masturbating before going to sleep, pay attention to see if you clench (your teeth) when you come. If so, it can help if you either can just kinda train yourself not to or if you bite down on something semi-soft which will keep your mouth from closing all the way i.e. finger, jelly toy, pal's shoulder etc.

They make a device that you put in your mouth and sleep with to prevent TMJ teeth grinding. They custom fit it, i forgot the frickin URL but if i find it i'll send it to you.
