Same for me - just that here for me is Canada :-)

That's very nice.

I've been chatting online with an American guy who lamented that he'd never learnt Italian although his family is of Italian ancestry. Maybe part of the reason was that his parents had divorced. Anyway, he really wanted to learn Italian which is not all that easy later in life.

Exactly. Armenia also has its own unique alphabet and was a regional power that competed with the eastern end of the Roman empire. Tigran The Great. Very long and distinguished history.

Interesting. I always thought the Italian part was bigger cause we have family friends from there and they make it sound like it's a lot more.

I guess just like New York has Little Italy then Canada must have similar areas.

Actually, a quick look at the report http://www12.statcan.ca/english/cens...=0&RL=0&FREE=0 shows that after French, we are the highest in population.

Actually, small world cuz I'm half Sicilian and half central Italian, my hubby is born and raised in the north of Italy so I think we have it all covered :-) Do you speak Italian or Sicilian? It's hilarious going to Sicily nowadays and nobody understanding the 'ancient' Sicilian that I speak and they think I'm outdated (little do they know I speak the Northern Italian too) Sicily isn't the sicily our parents left many moons ago!

I speak basic Italian. My mom was smart cause her thinking was that if I learn Italian then anyone can understand me but if I just learn a dialect then I won't. I do undestand Sicialian usually. When I'm there I have no problem understanding people but sometimes I do come across people that speaks various dialects I have a harder time with.

You're right about Sicily being a totaly different place now compared to when our parents were there. Hell I've noticed it myself changing cause I've been visiting since I was 7 and now I'm 28. It used to be waaaaaay more old fasioned while now it's a lot more "Westernized".

In Northern Italy it's waaaaaaaay westernized big time. Partying, raves etc.. is all going on. It's just like here but they speak a different language

Sicily is still a bit mixed. You've got some serious old fashioned attituded AND more modern thinking etc.. mixed together.

If you come out to Vegas next month I'll have to go drink an espresso with ya :-)

Ok, I speak fluent Italian but I never did learn to read and write it. My freaking high school had every language but Italian, lol.

But let me give this a shot anyways.

"Sicilia insula est"

No freaking clue what that means, lol

"Buongiorno a tutti quelli che comprendono la bella lingua. "

Good day to everyone that understands this beautiful language.

Salve Maru! Sveglio presto di Domenica mattina?

Meloman.......nah no Vegas for us in January.....maybe next time......if you get to Montreal, let us know! We'll definitely have to get some espresso in Little Italy!

We grew up the same, since my father was the central Italian, we could only speak proper Italian to him - one word of Sicilian to him and he would tell my mother - Poveri figli rovinati! For the Sicilians in Montreal at the time, we were a freak show cuz we spoke Sicilian perfectly and at the same time they could hardly understand the Italian.
