Every couple months I place ads in the newspaper for some extra help around the house. I have very specific needs. It must be a male and they must speak English.
I can't mention either in the ad. I can't even say "preferred". Do you have any idea what kind of response I get in a San Diego ad? Over 20 calls daily. Of those 20, 10 of them speak Spanish or Filipino with a mix of broken English, another 6 are English speaking females, 3 are too damn old... and 1, ONE, fits my BASIC criteria. Any idea how much that pisses me off?

The current legal implications and even societal differences will never produce a "fit for everyone" policy regarding discrimination or affirimitive action.
Weak Form Affirimitive Action States: I have two resumes in front of me. Nothing matters to me but the skills of the applicant. My hopes from this individual rest only in his qualifications for the job, cause the most qualified should be employeed.. Seems fitting? But weak form may ignore the fact that someone did not have the opportunities to get the qualifications of another, in other words, the history of both candidates was not evaluated on a level playing field. Some families may not be able to afford to send their kid to college or even have computers so the individual can learn a trade, but may be a very intellectual individual fully capable of performing job requirements. Everyone deserves an opportunity. Strong Form Affirimitive Action I have two resumes in front of me, but my company has reserved 6 spots for members of miniorties, so I am going to hire someone from a minority who is decently skilled to fill my quota. Seems like Reverse discrimination, strong form ignores qualifications all together and prejudices ALL races, deeming one "superior" and on "inferior" so the "inferior" will receive the job because of his/her social status or background. Seems to exclude an individual who has worked hard building skills and qualifications. Contradiction? This one won't be resolved. ![]() FF |

I think this thread is a non-issue at least in today's society. Maybe it won't be 100 years from now.
Racism existed and still persists. Schools were still segregated until 1969. Many of us lived in that time so it's not ancient history. Even after so called racism became illegal, it's not something that's going to disappear overnight. It's like telling people to treat slim attractive people the same as heavy unattractive people. Everybody will agree that they treat both the same but they don't and we all know this. It's documented fact just as racism is. It's also like saying that rich kids don't get an easier life chance than middle class or poor kids. We all know that they have better opportunities and that even without skills they can land the best jobs and leverage the most money with the least capital/risk (Bush could leverage 1 million dollars using 1000 dollars. Try to get a loan at your bank for 1 million dollars using 1000 dollars and see what they tell you). One of the inherent problems in covert racism is that the recipient (ex the minority) can actually be discriminated against without being able to prove it. On the other hand, they can also claim racism (which is a serious charge) when they were actually not discriminated against which is also difficult to prove/demonstrate. It's similar to when you know that somebody dislikes you even if they don't tell it to your face. One should be aware of the politics involved with racism. It becomes a very complex issue when one realizes that some blacks and whiltes actually benefit from racism. Many have made careers out of the 'fight' to end it. There are other forces at work too, such as when Denzel and Halle won Oscar's. By handing two blacks the top spot one year (earned or not totally earned) it gives the impression or illusion that this type of thing happens on a grand scale. It doesn't. For one, there are so few jobs that actually require much skill that qualify one human being over another. Most 3rd grade children could do many of the manufacturing assembly line jobs. Quota's are wrong. One cannot designate workers based on the number of people within a certain race. Affirmative Action really is a wrong fundamentally. The problem is that there appears to be no better alternative to try and rectify the advantage that some people have over others based on what has happened less than 40 years ago and what is still happening today. Although we were not involved in the beatings and lynchings 40 years ago, we benefit from being white over other groups. It's like saying I'm not the one forcing Indonesian children into sweat shops overseas. I've never done it. But I still buy the shoes those children create and I've benefited from their cheap labor. Many former Russian Communists were able to find jobs easier than blacks who fought with the US against those very same Communist 'enemies' during the World Wars. So while he may not be a Smith by name, he is still white, and is given better priviledges than many American born blacks. When people talk about Affirmative Action it's always very selective. The stories are usually full of unverifiable anecdotes and it precludes any real high paying jobs ex doctors, lawyers, CEO's. I do believe their are problems that need to be changed. For instance, immigration policies need to change. Things like speaking English are important and as the 'first' language of the country I think everybody should learn it fluently. I know that I would feel more comfortable going to a doctor who speaks English rather than broken English EVEN though both doctors may be able to perform equally competently. Anyway, that's my rant. This is a non-issue. It's over blown. I think it's a reaction by many in society who see it changing, some of it being legitimate but most of it fluff. |

ive been turned down for jobs, denied admission to a STATE college, and basically shit on because im a white guy with a decent family background. how the fuck can anyone justify denying someone an education because some underpriviledged black guy from the hood - who cant afford tuition but somehow has a bmw - wants to go to college. i actually tried to sue the school and no lawyer would take the case because it was (a) a state school (b) was about discrimination against whites. anyway... i got nothing against anyone of any race, but i think some of our laws from the 60s need to be reviewed. and honestly, if youre a minority, do you want to be admitted to school or get a job JUST because youre a minority? isnt that rather shallow? wouldnt you rather have opportunity based on your skills and brain? jesus christ dont get me started. ![]()

I know a lot of you have been to Vancouver, right? Well, you may have noticed... THERE'S NO WHITE PEOPLE HERE!
It was discovered just over a year ago now, going on 2.... that WHITE MEN are a VISIBLE MINORITY in Vancouver. That's right... there are more Chinese, East Indians and also more women here than there are white men.... we're the bottom of the food chain here. AND YET.... Do you know how many jobs there were waiting for me when I finished college? NONE. Finished near the top of my class and couldn't get one single job because every job that was posted on our board said "Looking to hire a woman or persons belonging to a visible minority." Reverse discrimination has gotten WAY out of control. Somewhere along the line, the 'good conscience' decided that all companies HAD to have a certain % of people from visible minorities to be working there in order to seem "FAIR" and unbiased. But it just went way out of control because they all started doing it, to an ugly degree. It's become something that is done every single time by every single company here... and me, being in a minority that is not the minority of the entire country, gets the shaft. I went for an interview at one place, straight out of school... they were looking for computer networking capable people on top of the other regular duties.... I was the ONLY person in my class that could do that. Did I get the job? no. They hired someone in a "visible minority" instead, who got lower grades, couldn't do the job as well as I could and had NO COMPUTER knowledge what so ever. Vancouver has become the worst city in the world to get a job for a white man.... but if you're not a white man, come on in... you'll get a job the first day you're here. |

Hiring people based on their skin color and/or gender is wrong. If I go in for surgery, I want the most qualified medical staff working on me. That's all that matters.
That's why I don't believe in 'affirmative action'. Enroll/hire people based on their abilities and work ethic. Not what they look like or what part of the Globe their ancestry is from. ![]()
