lol my friend is living in Bangkok at the moment and he was telling me about this massive IT mall with shops and shops full of warez. He sent me some CDs and it was all very professional, nicely done covers and all neatly laid out with cracks...

but personally I prefer to get my software from http://sourceforge.net and http://freshmeat.net

If you want MS Office for $3, visit Moscow's software shops. If you want a "Original holographic sticker" on the CD, be prepared to pay $2 more.
I don't pay for software I mustn't, I always try to find free alternative. But when there's no free alternative(or only bad free alternative), I buy the original copy.

I pirate software all the time. I am fed up with spending hundreds if not thousands on software which turns out not to do what you want it to do or doesnt do what it says it will do on the box.

Once i try the software and if i actually like it/it works for me then i'll actually go out and buy it.

Think about it. What if you actually bought every peice of software which you didnt use more than once or twice because it lacks what you need or the quality of it is just pure shit?

Example, Adobe Premiere. I installed it, launched it once and never used it again, should i have to pay for something i cant use? I dont think so. I bought photoshop though because i use that quite often.

Well, I guess everybody that runs a serious business doesn't (need to) use pirated software. At least we wouldn't take the risk just to save a few bucks.

Yes, for software for my mainstream business we always pay for the license... There are very hefty fines for companies using pirate software in the UK.

Most of us in development use Windows 98 for our desktops in anycase which is fairly cheap. All our servers are running Linux, with the exception of a couple of Sun's Sparcs.

I would actually move to Linux for my desktop if I could use Dreamweaver on it.

Same thing with PS2 Games.. You know how many games i have sitting here that i bought because they looked cool on the package only to play them and find out they're just a fraction of what the box hypes them up to be. Now they sit here and are 50-70 Beer Coasters (i dont play them anyways).

Sure, i could then sell the software i buy but at what cost? Getting a 3rd of what i paid for it? fuck that too

I think we're supporting the people who made the software enough just by USING the damn stuff. PAYING for it is supporting the guy who owns the company.. and if he owns a company he's obviously rich enough anyway

Next thing Microsoft will try to do is make a crappy OS with security like a bucket of swiss cheese and then sell it cheaply, and charge people for the hotfixes it supplies ever few weeks.

Thieves! All of them!!

People often ask why we don't offer a lifetime license of StatsRemote without password authorization. Until now we always gave them a few reasons, in the future we will just send them a link to this thread

Seems like the biggest most expensive software is usually
a)server based
b)installed by the vendor
c)nearly impossible to find online
d)not very crackable
Thats what I wind up paying $hundreds and even $thousands for.

All the cheaper software seems to flow like cheap-ass box wine on the net.

Yeah I like to 'try before I buy' too, ever heard of ShareWare?

It is the industries' response to this exact problem. Until (it will never happen) they find a way to make it impossible to copy software (and PS games) a "try before you buy" return policy is the same as giving there shit away for free.

One thing I stubmled across the other day that I think is great:

http://globalscape.com/downloads/

You can buy a "one day pass" to use their software for 99 cents. Innovative shit, I hope it makes 'em some money.

Yeah...check out their WHOIS info. They're in Russia I actually knew someone dumb enough to buy about $1,500 in software from a company like that (might've been them) and he wired them the money. Never heard from them again.

There are certain software titles you should pay for. In particular, the ones that are coded to "ping" piracy prevention servers. Example: MS SQL

Isn't that what trials are for? I've paid for all the software on my computer. I don't pay unless I give it a try first. Maybe the graphics and movie editing programs don't have trials, I really don't know.

I bought a couple X-Box games that I don't really like. But I'm not whining about it either. I should have rented the games first. Again, trials are great. Just look at how we make our money, from trials.

No box, No Manual, all you get is a copy of the software for $34.95???????

Why even pay $34.95 when you can download the same shit from Kazaa and be jsut as legal (definate pun inserted here).

If your going pirate software at least download it for free and not pay some other guy for it that downloaded it off kazaa hahaha.

This is a business. Pay for your tools.

Most of the really cool programs are just $25.

Pick and choose which big packages you really need. When you
buy them you get support and updates with less bugs.

I got lucky when I started in the IT world.
The company I got hired by bought me a pentium 133 w/800MB hard drive and a ATI Mach 64, 3D Studio Rev 4, Photoshop 2.5, and a number of other graphics apps so I could work from home.

A year later, our parent company was doing poorly, so they dropped our project, and literally told all the employees (all 4 of us) to keep everything, they were going to write it off on their taxes. I have been upgrading most of the software ever since.
(I still have the 133, it's currently a recipe server under my kitchen counter in case I forget how to make something)

I haven't done much professional graphics work since about 98, but I still enjoy it as a hobby, and one of the non-adult companies I'm affiliated with is fleshing out an MMORPG. We'll see how that turns out.
