![]() Well as of today I am trying to stop smoking. I haven't had a cigarette since last nigth at 11:30PM and its now 11:57AM.
I went this mornign to buy some of those lozenges (spelled right?) called Commit, OMFG, those damn things are sooooo nasty, I popped one in my mouth on the way home from the drug store and it actually was burnign my mouth and making me want to blow chunks. So I said fuck those and I am going to start the patch here in a couple hours as it worked once before for me for a few days its just this time I gotta have more strength to quit and with pneumonia thats my strength ![]() |

Everytime I want a cigarette I just shove a dum-dums sucker in my mouth, they are fatfree so it replaces the craving for awhile.
I know patches and gums and such are all in your head but at least with teh patch I get 21mg of nicotine a day which will help to some of the craving and will make it easier then trying to quit cold turkey...patches + dum-dums = success I hope ![]() |

It's very hard to quit especially if you smoke more then a pack a day for many years. With all the chemicals and nitcotine in your body its like having hot flashes when your sweating out the nicotine and chemicals. Drink plenty of water, 4-8 cups a day, it will help flush the checmicals and nicotine out of your body faster, the quicker you get it out the better you feel and the easier it is to quit, so after a few days you might not even want to conitnue the patches. |

Didn't use patches or anything else. At some moments I really feel the need to smoke but overal I don't miss it too much. The first weeks are the worst.... atleast for me. Good luck. |

I quit cold turkey too. For me it just took thinking about what I was doing to my body and what it was potentially going to cost me to keep smoking.
My boyfriend at the time had discovered a sore spot on his tongue while we were on vacation. In November of 1990 he was told it was cancer. In December he had a quarter sized piece of his tongue removed and spoke with a slur for the rest of his life. After radiation, all foods for him tasted like foil for the rest of his life. In August 1991, he had a lump in his neck. More cancer. Had all his lymph glands removed, his jugular removed and that whole muscle on the side of his neck. Had chemo and more radiation. In November of 1992 he started to have a cough that wouldn't go away. One night he started coughing blood. Cancer. Later that month he was basically cut in half and his lung removed. For the next year he was unable to climb the hill from our mailbox because he'd get winded. He could no longer surf or windsurf. He couldn't hike or bike. He was miserable. In July of 1993 he was having some back pain. We were driving home from a doctor's appointment and he shifted in the seat in the car. We both heard a loud crack sound like when you crack your knucles. He was in a lot of pain and we headed back to the hospital to find out he'd fractured his pelvis and that his pelvis was riddled with cancer. By September of 1993 he was hallucinating and not sure what was going on most of the time as the cancer had made it's way into his brain. In October 1993, 2 days before my birthday he was rushed to the hospital where he spent the next 4 days. He died late on a Saturday night with me, his mother and his oldest son in the room. He was 41 years old. He left 14 and 12 year old sons behind to grow up without a dad. He left his 26 year old girlfriend alone and with no money and a pile of bills from treatments. No cigarette was worth that loss. For me it's easy to stay smoke-free just thinking about dying and leaving my family and friends behind. I'd think that looking at your children and thinking about them watching you waste away and die before your time would make it easy to quit. Cigarettes aren't worth it.

Good grief, how tragic of a story.
But it is not easy to connect smoking to tragedy....it is funny how folks associate stop smoking with cigarettes and then keep smoking alot of reefer like that does not count... |

You should probably give up now and save yourself the heartache.
Unless you have a lifestyle change planned and a really good quit smoking program in place you have a 99% failure rate to expect. I quit 3 years ago.

Every Day, Hundreds of Thousands of Hoosiers Think About how to Stop Smoking.
Think about it: 20 minutes after quitting, your blood pressure drops. Carbon monoxide levels in your blood drop to normal eight hours after you quit smoking. Your chances of a heart attack decrease just twenty-four hours after quitting. Within three months of quitting, your lung function can increase by thirty percent. Coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decrease in one to nine months after quitting. Ex-smokers have fewer health complaints, better self-reported health status and reduced rates of bronchitis and pneumonia. After 15 years off cigarettes, the risk of death for ex-smokers returns to nearly the level of persons who never smoked in the first place. |

Pick A Quitting Date
Once you've made the decision to quit, the most important thing you can do is set a date to stop smoking. Choose a day within the next month or a date with special meaning (a birthday or anniversary). Develop A Plan Take a look at the various methods of quitting and decide which one is right for you. Some smokers decide to stop totally a abruptly. Others develop a plan that slowly reduces the number of cigarettes smoked each day until they reach their quit date. Many smokers meet with their doctors to determine the best plan for quitting smoking. They also examine their options for nicotine replacement therapies and medications that reduce cravings. On Your Quit Day Do not smoke. Get rid or all cigarettes, lighters, ashtrays, etc. Keep active. Try walking, exercising or doing other activities and hobbies. Drink lots of water and juices. Begin using any medication your doctor may have recommended. Attend stop-smoking class. Avoid high-risk situations where the urge to smoke is strong. Reduce or avoid alcohol. Don't Quit Alone Most successful ex-smokers have developed support networks that help them change their behavior and remain tobacco-free. Tell your friends that you plan to quit smoking and ask for their support. Find out if there are group counseling classes or Nicotine Anonymous meetings in your city. You can even find support networks on the World Wide Web that can help you can be successful. If you feel the craving to smoke again, find your friends and get busy. Most cravings for tobacco subside after five minutes. So, remember all the good reasons you had to quit and hang in there. Every minute you remain tobacco-free offers a new lease on life. |

its almost a month now since i tasted a stick of cigarette.
i don't have problem quitting since i doesn't really run in the family. just now, i brought some food at a might and while paying at the counter, i was starring at some packs of cigarattes that i used to smoke (West ICe). compared to the other brands i smoked before, this one is my favorite.. any tried it before? to cut the story short, i never did buy even a stick of it, but everytime i think or read something about smoking, sometimes even the thought of wanting it can't seem to get off my mind. instead, i just think of things that smoking would give me the fact that im building my own family 1-2 years from now. I hate to see them grow without a Father to guide them the right and wrong. i just hope that this time, my craving for it will stop. i hope that the stories of people could inspire you more to quit before all is too late ![]() |
