Richard Branson was on Richard and Judy now saying he still hopes to revive his plan of buying over Concorde. He wants to turn it into an even more luxury jet!

Watch this space...

i haven't flown on it but I haven't flown in the space shuttle either..doesn't stop it being something beautiful and a massive technological feat.

I hope someone does get it but you know there is no love loss between Branson and BA.

Sure there's no love lost. But for BA to keep these plains it will still cost them money every year if they fly or not. Why cut your nose off to spite your face?

I bet they will sell up given the right offer. I know for sure I would rather save money than loose it

Wasn't there a time a few years back when the engine fell off or something....?? Design flaw.

Yes. Flying over France I believe an engine blew up or something. Nasty, the plain crashed and killed a lot of people.

Thats one out of how many tho??

many thousands of people have flown it and it had one crash in 30 years..not really a bad track record. I tell you what isn't a design flaw - going supersonic. Something to be proud of.

I guess if you aren't a fan then maybe just don't look?

as I remembered, it's the preceeding airplane to blame. They either stirred the air too much, or lost something on the runway. --Now it sounds to be the airport's fault.

Yeah we live in the Woolwich area....not all that far from the Dome. It flew down past the Dome which is what they are aiming for. It was hard to get great photos as the sun was very bright but to the eye it was fine and there is no way not to hear the roar.

I've had it fly directly over head once before - at the reading music fest two years ago. We were on the boat that takes you down the river from the carpark to the fest site. Came out of nowhere with a huge boom and a boat full of the 'unimpressed generation' had to pick their jaws up off the ground.

Also, when I took the flight from JFK to the UK ..the one where I moved here to meet my now husband it was sitting next to my plane on the ground. Saturday is my 7th wedding aniv..it has a way of being around on special dates.

Yeah I knew it had something to do with engine failure or something. Like Sarah says 1 crash in 30 years with over 70 planes isn't all that bad!

The engine never failed. A hole got punched into the gas tank that then caught on fire.
The flight engineer inadvertantly shut down the engine when he saw the fire warning.

The plane was doomed before it ever left the gate. It was overloaded and the cg was too far to the rear. Plus the pilot took off with the wind to his back which is a bad idea.

There was a great special on this crash the other night on TLC

The Air France Concorde crash was caused by an object falling off the previous plane, a Continental Airlines plave. This sharp object was flicked up by the tyres of Concorde and pierced its fuel tanks, causing a fire which brought the plane down 10 miles after take off. There was no chance for the passengers and crew from the moment the plane went past the speed when it has to take to the air.

Nevertheless the plane had a perfect safety record and its unrivalled beauty will never be matched. It was expensive to fly on, cost £8,000 for a return from London to JFK. The advantages were huge, arriving in JFK before you had taken off from London (if you get the drift) and is/was the worlds only "time machine" for passengers.

Personally I am gutted its gone. I saw it on its maiden flight from Filton, and regularly it used to fly over my house on testing before it went into service.

BA should pass it to Branson, but it wont happen in a million years. What a shame Blair and his buch or cretins havent stepped in, as its a national treasure which is being retired many years before it needs to be.

Right, that's what I heard. Another reason for Frenchs to hate Americans.

the plane part falling off was disproven a long time ago.....photos show the flames starting before the plane ever reached the part of the runway where the piece was laying

The report now shows that since the pilot used a rough over-run part of the runway....plus maintence missed installing a wheel spacer caused the tired to flop left and right, fragmenting pieces of rubber that bounced off the wing causing the gash that ruptured the fuel tank
