This is my only comment for this entire thread, cuz I don't feel like getting into an argument tonight. :)
I have a 5yr old and I know why your gram locked the door - it wasn't to keep other people out, it was to keep YOU IN while she slept.

Most 5yr olds can't reach the deadbolt.

duuuuu

ummmmm, no. banning handguns would solve nothing. its true that americans are very violent. so what would banning guns and removing them from legitimate owners solve? you think the people who are in gun related crimes buy those guns at the local gun store? most likely not. they buy it out of the back of a van or bring it in from other places. that means a ban wouldnt remove those weapons from the criminals hands. automatic weapons are banned in callifornia yet they are still used all the time in drive bys and other crimes. how can this be if they're banned? all banning does is leave honest hardworking people defenseless against criminals. look up the stats of the states that allow easy access to consealed carry permits.... crime goes down. my guess is fear. criminals dont know who has what and that makes them think twice. :2 cents:

But why are Americans as a society so violent?

That's the really pertinent question.

You may refer to me as a gun freak for a few reasons:

1) I consider gun ownership a 'human rights' issue as the ability to feed, protect, shelter and clothe oneself and family should be left to the individual. When the government starts issuing me personal family security team I'll hand over my guns (naaa)...

2) This country (US) was founded by freaks with guns, the majority of the globe is not inhabited by gun freaks such as myself or our founding fathers and I'm sure there is enough room there for people that don't like this environment ;)

3) Guns and big trucks are a great way to compensate for having a small penis (not refering to myself, but feel free to apply it that way if it makes you smile)

;-)

Of course it's much more densely populated.

US - population of 300 million.

UK - population of 60 million, but the whole country's smaller than California.

:1orglaugh

uh GFY.. the east coast of the US is probably just as dense as the UK.. of course overall the US isn't as densely populated, but the majority of the population live in dense areas.

You're misinformed.

Homicide Rates (2000)

1 South Africa 50.14
2 Russia 21.40
3 Lithuania 10.00
4 Estonia 9.94
5 Latvia 6.22
6 USA 5.64
7 Spain 2.94
8 Finland 2.86

The US homicide rate is about twice that of the 8th country.

Here are some "similar" countries.

Canada 1.76
UK 1.61

homicides total/100k firearm/100k
US 5.7 3.7
UK 1.4 0.11 (england/wales)

fireearm rate ~36x higher..

Once you take the guns out of the statistics the homicide rates look a lot more similar

non-firearm homicides rates/100k
United States 1.98
Finland 2.38
Portugal 1.70
Israel 1.60
Italy 0.59
Scotland 2.05
Canada 1.40
Australia 1.42
Singapore 1.64
South Korea 1.58
New Zealand 1.30

As I said before. Moore's point was that GUN homicides in the US are much higher than the rest of the world.

And as I've said before, dead is dead. Murder is murder.

Thank you for those statistics - we can finally compare apples with apples. :)
