Get it! It's one of the few mini dogs that I like. And you can train dogs not to bark, or at least stop when you command them too.

had a miniature dachshund once, cute little bastard, but every time we would come home it would get so happy it would run around and lose control of it's bladder. I couldn't deal with it.

I had one for about 5 years. He was not overweight by any means and not very active, but I had to put him to sleep about a year ago because he became paralized from the middle of his back and down. This is fairly common in dogs with long bodies as the weight of it tends to make the back kill nevers and stuff.
Don't know the whole medical explination of it all, but I know it was the hardest thing I have ever had to do putting him down. Might want to concider that part of it before you get one. One a positive note, he was a great fucking dog - probably the best one I have ever had! Flow |

We had a red minature dachshund when I was a teenager. He was a kick. Lived about 13 years. His name was Oscar.. short for Baron Oscar Von Weinermeier.

My sister and her kids live with me, anyway they brought along their dachshund and in the beginning she was a pain in the ass.
But she has grown very fond of me and gets so jealous when I love on my own dog. So now we're cool, we hang and shit. |

lol.. those dogs are very popular here in southern germany. But don´t be fooled by their cute looks. A lot of them are famous "shinbone chewers" and "ball busters".

one of my dogs growing up was a mini (but a big mini). She just died earlier this year.
They are fantastic dogs. Ours didn't bark that much but we live in the woods and she did get slightly obsessed with barking at night if an animal walked by the house. In that way, a burglar would have had trouble getting into the driveway, let alone the house, without us hearing about it. They didn't need to know that she would have sooner licked them to death then bite. She only bit one person in all her years and that was a bratty kid that kept bothering her after she did a warning growel. You do need to give them a place to run around from time to time as they love to run around and be crazy. They have small legs but they can move fast on them when they want to do it. Also, their job in nature is to dig..and they do. The one thing about her that drove my mother nuts was that she would tear up pillows by digging her claws and teeth into them and starting to 'dig'. They also chew a lot of weird things. Ours had a thing for pencils and once she got one stuck in her throat and had to have it removed. Every breed will have issue but I have to say I would have another in a heartbeat. |

My sister had one. Very cute and sweet-natured, but she was in a apartment and the dog would be barking all the time at people walking by.....also the dog had a problem with peeing on the throw rug in the bathroom.
Very cute and nice dog....but not for me. |

I have 2. Had them since college. They are great. BUT, be aware they have back problems. So far, we have had 3 back surgeries between the 2, for a total of almost $10k. IF you can not afford the surgery, do not buy the dog.

BTW, I recommend keeping them in a crate when you are not home. They are naturally very curious. Mine have been crated since puppies, and love it.
My Oscar is very agressive, barks, etc. Snuggles on the other hand is the perfect lap dog, never barks, is as quiet as a mouse.

I came home about 6 weeks ago to oscar limping on his back legs, within about an hour he was totally paralyzed. Fortunately, we have one of the top animal surgery centers only a couple miles from my house. They called in a surgeon at 8pm and did emergency surgery. He is now doing very well, no pain and has 90% of his motion back. If he would not have had surgery within a couple hours, he would have been permanently paralyzed.

that isn't all that different from what killed ours. My mother came home from work and Farfell was on the floor having a spasm and couldn't move her back legs. Mom, picked her up and rushed right to the vet but it was too late.

I guess I was lucky with my Oscar. Never had any problems with his back. In fact he loved to be held on his back like a baby. He did have epilepsy for most of his life, but it was easily controlled with meds. If/when he did have the occasional seizure we had injectible valium around to help. Doc said the amount for the dog was enough to do serious damage to a human.
He was not a big barker, but he would let you know when someone came to the door. He thought he was a big dog though. Tried to take on the neighbor's older german shepard once. He was smart as could be. He would scratch once on the back door when he wanted to go out. If someone didn't hear him he'd come 'get' them and then go to the door and scratch again. We'd leave the door push just to.. and he'd push it open when he was done. Only thing he didn't do was close the door behind him.

That's kinda scary about all the back problems...Does that typically apply to the Minis as well?
PK, did your dog have seizures a lot? There has been one up for adoption forever around here that has epilepsy. It is cute as hell, but it just seems like a lot of work and maybe a lot of medical expenses. |

Back problems are very common with all dauchsands. You can try to reduce this by not lettin them jump, do steps, etc, but good luck.
So are bad teeth, you really should have their teeth professionally cleaned yearly and brush them weekly. My brother is a Vet and has had to put too sleep too many wiener dogs whose families could not afford the surgery.

I've decided to get him. Gonna pick him up on Friday. He is already paper trained, so I gotta potty train him I guess. She said his parents were always real sweet and not aggressive, even as puppies. She said this one is not a barker and is pretty laid back. It is $400 and it is purebred.
I need to go buy some pet supplies at PetsMart. Any name suggestions? |

my friend has one and every year in San Diego we go to the Weiner Dog Races. They line up about 10 of them, similar to the horse races and are let out of their stalls at once. Most of them stop and freak out and piss or shit...which by the way disqualifies them instantly...the winner moves on to the next race and so on and so forth... The final winner gets to ride on the Weinerschnitzel float at the Holiday Bowl parade. It is by far one of my favorite yearly activities in SD. A bunch of us go and cheer for Barrington in hopes that he will win. Last year he was bit in the ass by another dog and he lost the second round ...it was sad cuz he had been training so hard!

My suggestion is to keep the dog in the kennel when you are not home, and when you are not watching it. Do not get one too big, you do not want it to take a shit on one side, and sleep on the other. Idea being, it does not shit where it lives. Over time, give it more freedom.
When you take it outside, and it goes to the bathroom, give it a treat. That's how I trained both of mine, very easily. Dachshunds have a voracious appetite, and will eat themselves to death. You have to limit the food. When Oscar was a puppy, he got into a bag of food and tripled in size! Needless to say, he shit for days.

yeah don't put down any more than you want them to eat at that time and keep any food they could break into out of their reach.
We had to serve the cats food on the bathroom sink because Farfell would eat theirs too if we put it down. |
