I guess I was lucky with my Oscar. Never had any problems with his back. In fact he loved to be held on his back like a baby. He did have epilepsy for most of his life, but it was easily controlled with meds. If/when he did have the occasional seizure we had injectible valium around to help. Doc said the amount for the dog was enough to do serious damage to a human.
He was not a big barker, but he would let you know when someone came to the door. He thought he was a big dog though. Tried to take on the neighbor's older german shepard once.
He was smart as could be. He would scratch once on the back door when he wanted to go out. If someone didn't hear him he'd come 'get' them and then go to the door and scratch again. We'd leave the door push just to.. and he'd push it open when he was done. Only thing he didn't do was close the door behind him.
