Being an American living overseas I can relate to Depp, but don't agree with his statements. He must feel very strongly though as celebs are usually very careful about the image they project and the public statements they make.

Regardless, I think Hunter Thompson is one of the best writers of the 20th century. His tempo is deft. Breakneck. His word usage is harsh and fits his stories. His writing has great voice.

bad choice of words, no doubt but then it is a good thing that most of us don't have everything we say being written down as we say it.

Living away from your country puts you in a weird places sometimes. On the one hand you are often put in the position of having to answer for whatever your country does. People will ALWAYS ask your direct opinion on any political and often non-political things originate from your country that make international news.

On the other hand you get to see the country from the unique position to most people that live back home - you see its place in the world. Sometimes things really tick you off and other things you can see how they tick off countries AND you can often see how it wasn't done intentionally.

I don't like Bush, my friends over here know that because like I said people are always asking for opinions. You are put in the position of being a spokesperson and an ambassador for your country. That is me and I am a nobody. He must get asked every two seconds. Especially as he was in France over this last period of world history.

However, what I always make a point of telling people is that you have to seperate the gov't from the people. They don't always go hand in hand. For all we know he says that 99 times out of 100 too but this one time he didn't and it got written down.
