On NBC last night, America was treated to the Miss Teen USA Pageant:

Underage girls prancing around in bikinis? Check.
Underage girls showing off tits and ass? Check.
Millions of men recording the show and jacking off? Check.

So why isn't this show suffering the same scrutiny that "teen model" sites always receive?
Why isn't Oprah inviting the girls and their parents onto her show so that the audience can clap while she asks self-righteous questions?

No nudity, no hardcore sex, none of the things that would qualify the pageant as pornography.

That said, those things make me sick and we all know why grown people really watch them (aside from the people who are involved in the pageant scene and have a genuine interest in the outcome, some of whom are still under suspicion in my book).

The difference is in the marketing methods used.

In the pageant:

- the emcee doesn't say things like "wouldn't you love to fuck little Betty Sue??"

- The emcee doesn't say "Look at her great tits and ass! If you want to see her nude just turn to channel XX and have your credit card ready!"

On most "teen model" sites..... they DO say things like that. Sexual things filled with innuendo. If this Hawkeye guy can't see the difference, then he has a bit of a perception problem.

Well, that IS a point I have made in the past on these boards. I mean, there is modelling, and then there is "modelling"..... There are modelling sites like modelpromote.com which have portfolios of models in order to get them more work in modelling. Teen model sections are often included in such sites, and some of the models do have their own sites, links to their sites are often included in the portfolio pages of the modelling site. Is it wrong? Personally I don't think so. Teens are just as eligible to do modelling work as any other model. Teen models pose for lots of advertising out there, so showcasing some of their work on a modelling database isn't out of line.

But that is vastly different from sites that market the girls in an obviously sexual context, and invite surfers to pay to see "more of them" etc.

One is professional, the other.... isn't.

The girls entering these pageants are doing it for their careers, for scholarships to college, etc.

The girls on the 'teen model' sites are doing it so that the parents can get money.

I don't see the pageants as child pornography - like CD said, there's no similarity whatsoever besides the fact that the girls are 17.

It's like screaming that you can't have a non-nude site featuring FHM, Cosmo, and Maxim-type photography... because "all people looking for non-nude are pedophiles and you know that so if you use the term non-nude on your site you're catering to pedophiles and looking for pedophilia traffic".

Have you ever been around these contestants? Most just want acceptance and being judged "beautiful" gives them that acceptance. Anyone remember the time the Video show was in the summer at the Venetian and that stupid pageant was there as well...

nothing more chilling in a surreal way that to see porn stars parading down the hallway to their show floor, passing hordes of little girls ready for a pageant.

The similarity in the dress and makeup was horrifying. And I mean that in the worst sense of the word.

I'm not sure which was more despairing, making the comparison or watching it dawn on these pageant mothers that there was such a comparison to be made.

I'm not saying the Miss Teen USA Pageant is "child porn", I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy in the American system.

Apparently it's perfectly acceptable to show bikini-clad underage girls on prime time TV, but it's not ok to do so on the internet.

I think it's hilarious that adult webmasters on this board get all outraged over non-nude teen sites, yet have no problem (rightfully so) with almost-naked girls on TV.
