To all designers, content people and other offering services.
Ok here is the story,
We all have issues with people not meeting deadlines and stuff. Half upfront and so on bla bla bla.... Anybody here ever think of offering Net 15 or 30? Cause TBH I think from this point on I aint paying anyone till they produce what they promised. I have many people have have dealt with here and paid in full. In my other biz I give net 30/60 and 90 to the big customers. Do you think this is a good idea? Maybe not net 30 for services right away but in full first order and net whatever afterwards? Thats how business is generally run I really cannot understand why when you offer a service . I pay and you say it will be done by so and so and it isnt . This pisses the shit out of me. |

In any normal business a minimum 2 week wait is standard. You ask for less time you are taking a big chance. Yes this should appy even for ONE BUTTON. Most good people are usually busy with other customers.
On the other hand, I've had pleny customers that I have given net 30 to, and for some reason or another they flake out, sometimes after you started work on the project. The deposit just makes sure they intend to see the project through the end and that they in fact have money to pay for the project. The 50% down is pretty standard stuff for most contracting jobs in any industry. I do offer net 15 or 30 to repeat clients after we establish a good relationship, most clients offer to pay upfront anyway because they understand what it means to contract and that it sucks to wait for payment for a project that, depending on size, could take up to a month to complete. When this is your bread and butter, believe me waiting a month can really hurt your pocketbook.

Depends on who we are dealing with.
Respectet webmasters can pay up front or on delivery. Webmasters we know, and have dealt with before get the same deal. Other webmasters we offer to make a draft of the design, and if they then like it, they pay a % up front, and the rest on delivery. If it's small design job, like a 50$ job or something, it would be no problem to pay on delivery. But if it's something that will take a week or so, it would be bad for business to work for a week, and then not get paid. But we will work on the design until the client is happy with it...

If this were like any other business, you would have a point.
However, the same reason you want net15 or net30 is the same reason i require 100% up front from all clients.. and 50% up front after that. You have been fucked.. I have been fucked. It works the same on both sides... In the end... do business with people you trust.. or people who have a reputation of trust. I do.. We have several clients who pay after the work is complete.. but only because they have proven their "credit-worthiness" to me. Are these coimpanies you deal with.. the type of companies who charge half the price and promise promise promise.. but never deliver? You get what you pay for! :-)

n15 and n30? Do I have a buisness account set up with you with your buisnesses information, address and so on, with a proper credit check? No.. that probably wont happen...
Which happens more? #1 - Designer designs delivers the goods, or does the work, only to not hear from the client when they go to collect the money. #2 - Client pays half or full up front and gets nothing. I think #1 happens a lot more. If you want to pay designers every 15 days, hire one part time who lives near you and can collect a paycheck. Buisness at a design firm or a Systems Analysis firm for developing solutions may be run on a collection at the end, but there is definatly a collection in the begining for consultation. |

I only accept 100% after production if I know the person, or know where he/she lives.
I have in the past accepted 25% up front, 25% upon LIVE testing, and 50% if they want the code. Rep is important. Most designers will NEVER rip off a client - a designers rep is CRUCIAL. |

ya know, ultimately it falls on you as the individual to be a good judge of character. No one can do that for you. If you're an idiot, expect to be taken. Use your god given sense of judgement and gauge people accordingly.
