Get an apartment with a nice view. The view is the key when you live alone. Keeps you feeling connected to the rest of the world.

Don't overpay. Most landlords are desparate for good tenants.
You can get all sorts of deals like 1 month free.

Read your lease carefully before signing.

Make sure your parking spot is close to your unit.

Check the grounds and make sure its well taken care. If they don't take care of the outside, the inside is usually not taken care of either.

Ask other tenants how the place is run.

More important than anything find out who will be living above you, below you, and next to you on both sides. The worst thing in the world is to get neighbors with kids that scream and roughouse, couples that fight all the time, punks that play music loud day and night and always have people over partying, or if you're the noisy type, ask to be put in a unit near other young people so you don't get complaints about you.

Its a lot of fun when you get your first place.

Oh yeh, make sure they have good cable TV hookups.

Good Luck!

You MAY think you can live with carpets. Dont' fall into that trap.

I hate carpets, every place I have ever rented had carpets and they are such a pain in the ass.

Wood flooring is so much nicer / low maintenance.

Just me though

How much crap do you have? If you have all the standard crap, ie entertainment center, table + chairs, etc. Your going to want more than 500sq. ft

If you live in warm nice weather then get a place by the pool/spa so you can cruise over all the time.

Depends though on what you are after, if you are like me when I first moved out I spent 99% of my time at friends places so it was a waste of my money to have a nice place since I was just there to sleep. But if you want friends over all the time then get a nicer place.

I agree on the parking thing it should be close and covered that way your car won't get as dirty so fast.

I used to live in Miami (I'm in lauderdale now).... anticipate getting railroaded unless you want to live in the HOOD. Expect to pay no less than 700.00 for a semi-decent neighborhood/older/smaller apt. and watch those older buildings, because I used to live in a studio and my fricken electric bill was 100.00/month.

I'm planning on moving down to fort lauderdale and I was thinking about how the rents are so cheap and saying whats wrong down there.

theyre around $500-600/mo, the pictures look good but I guess you have to see the area first.

always pay your rent... so when you're broke, you'll always have a place to crash.

If it sounds too good to be true, it is.... If it's under 600.00, the neighborhood most likely isn't terribly desirable. Tamarac, Coral Springs, North Lauderdale and Margate are all in Broward County and for the most part - decent apartments that are reasonably priced.

Hey AdvertisingSex (Ray right?), just looked at your stats and you're making a bad amount per click man. I'm making at least double that off TGP traffic. Thought I'd let ya know
