I know there are only a few hundred men in the US who can bench 500 pounds. That being said 500 pounds 37 times would come out to be a max of about 850-900 pounds?

Now, that is a shit load of weight. I have never heard of anyone ever benching this much.

What is the worlds record?

Heck, I could bench 500. Did it a year and a half ago. I was trying to see how much I could bench and stopped at 475. Then came back and tried again and did it. Freakin' scary.

I'm going back to the gym this month to go for the gold and see if I can hit as close to the world's record as possible.

ONe thing I've found out is strength is one thing, but FORM is the winner.

4 times at 400 and 2 at 500. But 37 times at 500??????

It is a lot of weight, but last time I checked a few years ago I believe a gentleman named Ted Phillips had the record at 781lbs.

You would be suprised at how strong you can get! It's not size either. It's more bone density, tendon strength and 'then' muscle quality plus damn good form or you might hurt yourself.

I shoulder press 200 easy and although I'm 230lbs it was tougher doing that than bench pressing. Each person is different.

To tell you the truth I got stronger on a vegetarian diet. Scary strong on a vegetarian diet and felt better too!

Well Greg, I too have benched over 500 (505 to be exact) and I did it eating a lot of steak, so that just goes to show you it has very little to do with diet. =)

Bench pressing is MOSTLY about join/ligament tie-ins.. I've always had to struggle with my bench (it's always been significantly behind my squat and deadlift).

However, I've got a friend who's got the perfect tie-in's and benches as much as I do at a lot less bodyweight. Unfortunately, he's not nearly as strong in other lifts. (shrug)

[Edited: BTW, 37 reps at 500 lbs is bullshit. By my calculations, that would be a 1RM of somewhere between 1050 and 1100 lbs - IMPOSSIBLE!]

He's benching 675 in the picture.. but I still don't buy his bullshit story of 37 reps at 500, considering his 1RM max (peaking at content time mind you!) is 700.8 lbs.

When I was squatting 675x3 (belts, wraps, no suit), I was squatting 495 for 12-15 reps. It just doesn't equate.

I used to work in a factory opening 40 lb boxes and stacking the contents for use on assembly line. Some days I would move more weight than that, and I was only 16 at the time.

The site listed above has stats on bench presses. There IS a Bill Gillespie from Washington State listed who tops the boards. If it's him he is indeed a world class athlete and I have to agree with his quote in the article posted at the top of the thread about age and strength.

I learned form and diet work best for me and my bench has increased every year.

But 500lbs at 37 reps is like biblical strength.

But you never know. As far as all the "formulas" saying 400lbs. 10X = 700 lb max. That is a very flawed theory. I know some guys that free climb.....They weigh 130lbs.....And can bench 135lbs. a million times........But can't lift an ounce over 200lbs max. There bodies are developed for stamina at a given resisitance.(Their body weight) That theory does not fly with me. You can make the same comparison with runners.....If he can do a 100meters in 9.9(his max.) he should be able to run 5 miles in X time....Bullshit. It is all about the way you train, and what you are trying to achieve. He may have developed a new method of training . Who knows ?

True Jason, but the formula I've used with great success is:

Max = Weight + (Weight * Reps * .03)

It's a bell curve, with 80% of the population falling within the parameters of that formula, give or take 1-2%. Now there may be some that fall drastically short, or go significantly above what that formula dictates, but only by 5-7% MAX.

Try it - it's pretty damn accurate..
