Any tips on selling a car to a private party?

I have a car that's been sitting in my garage unused and I'm looking to sell it.

Was thinking about listing it on craigslist.

Any tips on how to dump this thing without going to a dealer and getting raped?

Thanks

to get the most out of it generally you take it to a mechanic you trust and find out what they say it needs, if its something very small get it done and mention anything you have done to it when selling. if its something major and not worth fixing for you expect that they will find that out before they buy and use it as leverage. either way it removes most of the surprises of what you will get for it. if it's not road worthy then you can always sell 'as is' but be upfront with what is wrong with it and it will avoid you any headaches down the road.

I just had it in the shop. I had all the fluids changed and I had to put a new exhaust on because it had straight pipes which are illegal in the state i'm in. Mechanic said the car is sound and needs nothing.

Trying to decide if i'm going to try the facebook marketplace or CL route.

Either way i'm sure it's going to be a shit show.

No problems ever.

You could always save it for a trade-in as well.

Selling cars like that (I sold m3 and have sold some AMGs) will also attract tire kickers that just want to take it for a test drive. Make sure you vet your buyers and they can prove they can actually buy it or they will waste your time.

??? What do you mean that you don't know how to sell a car?
Just sell it for a price that you want it to sell and don't accept the lower one.

I see no reason for doing any repairs in this car. Just be honest with a potential buyer.

Go to a trusted mechanic, check it for yourself (like u did), later offer the same to a potential buyer, and get the money that you want...

And yeah, the dealers will always offer you less, obviously.

There's no need for a gun. Arrange for payment and transfer of the pink slip at a bank. There's no need to carry around large sums of cash and worry about being robbed. Everything that happens at banks is recorded on surveillance cameras.

If a criminal has a gun and wants to take your car away, it doesn't matter if it's listed for sale or not.

No, I haven't. There aren't any pawn shops near me. In my neighborhood, I see very expensive cars parked in public garages and on the street, including Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and even the occasional Bugatti. Anyone who wanted to steal one of these at gunpoint merely has to wait a few hours for the owner to return. Why bother with classifieds?

I have this strange affinity for early to mid 80's luxury cars, so I go through phases where I'm buying and selling them. Trust me when I say Facebook Marketplace is going to be your best bet. If you post on Craigslist you are going to get 50 scammers for every one legitimate buyer, and if you post your phone number as your contact you're going to get constant Nigerians texting you day and night using the Google Voice app. I'm sure you've heard of all the Nigerian Paypal scams where they try and get you to ship your car, so I won't rehash them.

Facebook Marketplace isn't perfect, but at least you can get an actual profile to look through and vet. You'll get the occasional Nigerian with a fake profile contacting you, but for the most part Facebook is pretty good at catching them...

I have sold a lot of stuff on CL and FB including a couple of cars and my Harley.

1. Go to kbb and get the blue book value. Be honest with what all features it has and what condition it is in. This will give you your high and low.

2. Take lots of pictures. Make it so the buyer can see every inch of the vehicle without having to come see it. Too many people think they can sell a $20,000 car with 1 picture. The pictures are your strongest selling tool.

3. As others have said. Be honest in the ad about any issues. Also be honest about any enhancements or extras that are involved.

4. List it at the high end of the blue book, possibly a little higher. Definitely higher than whatever price you actually want for it. That way you can come down in price if you need to. If you start at the price you want you have no room to haggle and many people still like to do the haggle thing.

5. Don't list your address or phone number in the ad. Let all contact start at email, that way you can weed out the scammers. Get a gmail address just for the car sale. Use that when posting the CL ad. Do not give out the phone number or address until you know you have someone truly interested that has the cash.

6. Do not let anyone do a test drive without seeing the cash or at least holding something of theirs during the test drive. If need be, be an asshole and ride along on the test drive.

I did a quick look up on kbb and it appears, if you sold your car out here, that the range is from 22-25.5k or so. Probably higher where you are. If it is in excellent condition then price it up at the high end.

This is all just in my opinion, of course.

Good luck with the sale.

I have sold a dozen cars in my life with no issues; cash only, if they want to drive it first, go with them.

Hopefully it is legal.

Make sure to get a solid ID on the guy that buys it and report the same to the DMV.
I had a guy that never registered the Jeep I sold him and it ended up in a tow yard with a $500 parking fee and even bigger tow and storage fee with a big dent in the side of it.

Damn. Did you owe the 500 to the tow yard?
The whole bill came to something like $2,500 , luckily I had a copy of the bill of sale that the guy had signed, I took it to the DMV and got it all straighted out. That jeep was a good car, but had 287,000 miles on it. It wasn't worth taking back.
Point is don't trust anybody, back up everything just in case.

I have a bunch of friends that if they buy a used car or bike, they have me look at it first, I own more tools than most auto mechanics and will do things like compression checks if I think it's needed.
Paperwork is what can screw you, liability being the worst.

So people in the US are responsible for 13% of the carbon in the atmosphere which 95% is not from Humans, like cars and trucks and stuff and they want to spend trillions to fix it while Solar Panel plants are powered by coal plants
think about that

Selling a car is a local thing; Laws change from state to state (assuming you live in the US).

You are must better of selling a car to a private party vs a dealer; You will get more money for it. Of course, this depends on what you are selling.

A few years ago I sold my truck. I had put a lot of work into it, it was four wheel drive, everything worked, looked like it was new even though it was a twenty-five year old truck. I put put it up on Craiglist for $2k above blue book value, and quickly had a cash customer. Meh. Two years later I see the truck on Craiglist for half of what I sold it for, so I bought it back from him. He told me it was a money pit, had to fix the rear axle, suspension so.... I've had no problems with it since, although honestly I don't drive it much.
