More than a million dogs and cats are killed every year in Indonesia's meat trade

Terrified dogs wait in wire cages to be beaten to death as cats are blow-torched while they are still alive - this is the horrifying reality of Indonesia's live meat trade.

There are more than 200 'live' meat markets in the south Asian country, and Downton Abbey actor Peter Egan travelled to two of the most notorious in order to lay bare the suffering of animals condemned to this fate.

These deeply disturbing scenes were filmed at Tomohon’s 'Extreme Market' and Langowan Traditional Market, both located in North Sulawesi province.

The markets do not just deal in dog and cat meat, but also serve up reptiles such as pythons and lizards to eager customers.

However, dog and cat meat are staples of such places with more than a million of the animals slaughtered in Indonesia each year alone.

Videos from the two markets, visited by Mr Egan alongside the Dog Free Meat Indonesia campaign group, show animals forced into cages in hot weather, awaiting their fate.

Animals were filmed being clubbed to death in full view of the cage-mates, making the experience as terrifying as possible.

After being beaten over the head with large pieces of wood the animals are taken to be blowtorched so the hair can be stripped away.

However, many of the pitiable creatures are still moving or twitching as the flames are applied to their bodies.

Mr Egan said: 'Nothing could have prepared me for the sickening horrors I witnessed.ha
'This part of Indonesia is world-renowned for its breathtaking volcanic mountain landscape, stunning dive waters and beautiful beaches, but the ugly brutality of the dog and cat meat trades will haunt me for the rest of my life.ha

'The absolute indifference to animal suffering was so utterly shocking and heartbreaking.ha
'I saw countless dogs and cats waiting to be slaughtered, to lose their lives in the most brutal and cruel way.ha

'There was nothing I could do to take away their pain, but their pleading eyes and the stomach churning smell of blood and burning dog hair, are scenes of hell that I shall never forget.haha

'I am committed to exposing these horrors and to working with the Indonesian and global community to fulfil our united goal of ending the abhorrent cruelty of the dog and cat meat trades.'

While there, Mr Egan paid one trader in order to save four dogs from being slaughtered, but was not able to rescue any more.ha

Only a minority of Indonesians eat dog or cat meat, but those who do claim it has healing properties or defend it as traditional.

Campaigners say the practice is cruel, spreads deadly diseases such as rabies, and leads to thieves stealing pet dogs so they can be slaughtered.

Dog Free Meat Indonesia is calling for a complete ban on the practice in Indonesia, following the example of other countries in the region such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Thailand.

Lola Webber, Change For Animals Foundation co-founder and DMFI representative who accompanied Peter Egan to the markets, said: 'Thousands of dogs and cats are killed at the markets in North Sulawesi each week, and it is estimated that 90 per cent are stolen pets, owned or street dogs.ha

'Some 80 per cent are imported from other provinces, which is illegal under the country’s anti-rabies law prohibiting the movement of dogs across provincial borders in rabies endemic areas.ha

'Having visited the dog and cat meat markets in North Sulawesi countless times, the horrors never cease to bring me to despair.ha

'Despite DMFI’s exposés of the cruelty, warnings of the dangers to public health and risk of rabies transmission, nationwide and global condemnation, and promises of action by local and central governments, business continues as usual.'

My issue and the story focus is about the brutal way they’re killed. Humanely kill them to survive but don’t blowtorch a live animal. Don’t beat them to death with wooden boards in front of other animals.

I’m not a big fish eater but would never eat line caught fish. Locally the boats have huge nets and scoop up what they can. They sneak in undersized lobster and get caught occasionally.

“All animals are alive before they are slaughtered for dinner.” Did you use Google to learn that? Do you truly think we believe dead animals are killed again for dinner? Sheesh.

Dog and cat birth control is not expensive but in a third-world country, every penny counts. They need Vets Without Borders so they can donate their talents to spay animals. Or, go over and bring back planes full of animals. The demand for pets here is huge. Get pet food companies to donate food to help out. Yeah, it’s a crazy idea but it’s needed. Teach people how to plant and cook food with protein instead of meat. Fish, peanuts, and other foods can be had for a little money.

Eat pets. But kill them humanely. It’s a living creature and dogs do more than be pets. They smell smoke and wake you up to get out. Dog died last week doing that. They alert you of danger and protect you at all costs.

FYI, lobster and crab had to be cooked live. There are enzymes in the meat that make the meat toxic once they are dead.

After throwing all the females back you put the males in the freezer for a short bit to "stun" them and they stop moving and feel nothing. Then you take them out and sever the nerve center with a knife, then cook them right away or flash freeze them. Same with lobsters you dope.

It’s done here. Go to the restaurant and choose your lobster. They then cook it live. I’m a lobster freak and eat it often because it’s cheap here. At about 16 I realized that it dies a horrible death. I went to a school in Buzzards Bay whose name I can’t remember and talked to them. They teach boating and water craft. According to them, lobsters have few nerves and feel little or no pain. Death is instant when they hit the boiling water.

I asked a million questions about seafood and pain. You can’t ask a fish if hooks hurt.

My grandfather had a meat market and fresh farm which is a few miles from me now. I saw cows being led to slaughter. I cried often but he explained that the cows get a shot that hurts a little and they go to sleep. Now I know that some steer are treated differently but I won’t go into that.

Look, as I’ve said, I get it. Some countries are raising people to do what they must to survive. Needles and medications cost money but funds raised for the ethical killing of animals are needed. A shot isn’t a thousand dollars but getting the meds to everyone and seeing it used on animals and not their neighbors is crucial. Having a veterinarian visit and rewards for the inoculation sounds great but doing it?

Grandiose ideas with no way to implement the them.

Things change in the world. Discussion like this helps ideas to grow. We can’t change it but it’s nice to dream
