I was watching the discovery channel the other day and there's a place in Africa where at the age of 5 boys are given a puppy to take care of. They have to take very good care of it as their pride and joy. I can't remember if it was the age of puberty or a specific age in years but at some point, to become a man, they have to kill the dog. The boy that was to become a man was sitting next to his dog crying.
They used to do the same thing in Russia:
