MERKEL CAVES IN: Germany 'to offer to scrap EU tax on cars' in Trump victory

ANGELA Merkel appears to have caved in to Donald Trump with Germany considering scrapping the European Union’s 10 percent tax on American car imports.

President Trump’s ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, has held high-level talks with German car makers BMW and Volkswagen about dropping car tariffs between the US and Germany.

The manufacturers said they were open to the idea of dropping tariffs as long as it was part of a larger overall industrial scheme.

This comes as trade relations between the EU and US become increasingly tense, with Mr Trump infuriating those in Brussels by slapping huge tariffs on European steel.

In response the European Commission said they were going to add a 25 percent charge on £2.43 billion worth of US goods.

But Germany appears to be considering breaking rank in order to protect their lucrative car industry.

The Wall Street Journal revealed the climbdown while the two parties are deep in talks.

Mr Trump has taken a hardline approach to US-EU trade since taking power, especially when it comes to German car manufacturing.

In January 2017, shortly before being inaugurated as president, he said: “When you walk down Fifth Avenue, everyone has a Mercedes-Benz in front of their house.

"How many Chevrolets do you see in Germany? Not too many, maybe none at all, you do not see anything over there, it's a one-way street.

"I love free trade, but it must be a smart trade for me to call it fair."

And at this month’s G7 summit he took aim at the EU, accusing the bloc of using the US as a “piggy-bank”.

He said: "The United States has been taken advantage of for decades and decades and we can't do that anymore.

"People can't charge us 270% and we charge them nothing. That doesn't work anymore.”

I know we see something like negotiating with NK differently ... but at the end of the day, we finally have guy in office that is forcing everyone to the table.

Our entire lives have been nothing but massive trade deficits... or BS trade deals where the other side ignored their obligations (China etc)... and we just continued doing nothing but quietly grumbling. Its time in my opinion to balance the books in these areas. China has been by far the most dishonest of any and all trading partners on the planet with their blatant theft of IP, their refusal to open their markets, their open manipulation of their currency, their having no intention at all to abide by their end of any trade agreements and so on.

I hear ya and tend to agree. My big concern is the fact that trump has put all those trade deals in flux at the same time. It's not just 1 product and 1 country, it's a lot of products and a lot of countries all at the same time. throw in some nukes too. does trump think he can win both denuking NK AND get trade concessions from China? that's a lofty goal.


i'm open to it. but certainly reasonably skeptical.

They gave away too much and continued doing nothing to balance while tons of American tech, blueprints etc was stolen in this case by China. Now Trump wants to fix some of the things and consequences due to EU countering Trump's trade penalty is that Harley-davidson gets slammed in an already difficult situation.

I would compare it to any negotiation. You have to walk into the room ready to either walk away and do the extreme or negotiate a great deal for all involved. There is no perfect way to negotiate with cheats. There is also no good way to shore things up across to many trade partners where we have deficits without really making a lot of noise.I think that in cases like China, they have a decades long history of cheating every deal they have... so to simply say "hey, lets sit down adn talk about it" never works. WHen they think their largest trading partner is fully willing to blow things up and look elsewhere, they will be willing to talk and also more likely to avoid the same in the future. What Americans and others can never understand is that many Asian countries like Japan or China and some others only have a long term view. Generations. They are not negotiating for poll numbers in a 4 year term. So any tactics have to be severe and resulting agreements have to be binding... with the legitimate threat at least for the next 6 years of Trump just announcing on Twitter he might end it for any small test on their side as they always do.

I think the HD shirts must be copies, but who cares. The 3 euro shirts are good quality, the 1,50 euro shirts will disappear after 2 times washing.

One time the customs at Amsterdam airport said my underwear was fake while he was searching them. I said that i didn't wash them also. After i said i live in Asia and he must try himself to find a real one, he let me go. Strange, a lot of customs try to find copyrighted products, but they never go after pirated tubes, than people have to start proceeding on their own cost.

true - i tried to find some simple t-shirts for my wife here and it was impossible.

i bought a suitcase full of fake ones for he and when i came home i found a notice on my suitcase that it have been opened.

inside i found ALL t-shirts and another notice that there where 2 lighters in the suitcase and only 1 is allowed. they took one of them away.

btw. the "fakes" they are selling here and not always fakes. as most of the "originals" are produced in Asia they ship it in margins to europe or the usa. in most cases, large parts of these original goods remain unshipped because demand is no longer there.
so in MANY cases you think you buy a fake you buy the original.

another thing what i really can show you is that even big trademarks in europe and usa are selling the unsold ORIGINALS back to asia (because they don´t want them sold cheap in their own markets).

i have here an offer from a very well known (and fucking expensive) spanish trademark.
they offered the rest stocks for different countries (within them many asian countries)
the price they ask is per kilo less than 1,50 € (this is more or less the weight of one jeans what is sold in the store for 150,-- €)

nobody - even in china - can produce that on such a price. so they do not have to steal it - they get it. same as they get pharmacy products regular on 1/10 or less of the regular price.
