Please tell me your wisdom teeth stories...
I have to have my wisdom teeth pulled soon and I'm soooooooo scared. It would be reassuring and therapeutic if I could hear other peoples experiences so I can be prepared. I am thinking of going under general anasthesia but I'm scared I might sleep forever and die and never wake up! This will also be my first surgery, I have NEVER had surgery or stitches in my whole entire life, and I have never had general anasthesia before. And I can't imagine getting stitches, having a needle poking through my gums and my live flesh and blood!!! That is so scary.
![]() I know it's only very minor oral surgery, not anything major like heart surgery or anything, but I read on the net that it's still possible to die from getting your wisdom teeth taken out, but I think the fatality rate is like .01 % ![]() Also please let me know if you just had a shot of novocaine, or did you go under full anasthesia? And did you have to have stitches???? Did it hurt a lot? Please tell me your stories so I can have the courage to get my wisdom teeth out ![]() |

You don't want to hear my wisdom tooth story... it's almost as big of a horror story as the delivery of my children.
Best of luck to you though! |

Are you serious?? Is it that bad? O'h man. I'm way too young to have kids (only 25) but I don't think I ever will want to have any after hearing horror stories about the epidural being shoved up your spine, ouch! And horror stories about people not having enough time to get anasthesia before a casarean. I am never having a kid. |

The top two came out no problem, two weeks later the bottom two that were severely impacted were to be taken out.
I took the meds they gave me to simmer me down and knock me out, got in the chair and he took that giant needle and started stabbing it into different spots around my swollen gums, shooting the numbing fluid deep within the nerve endings. Comes back a bit later and starts to hack into my gums ~ but I wasn't numb! I felt it all and started shrieking, he jumped back and grabbed the needle again, reinjecting everywhere I still had feeling. One side was numbed, so he started extracting that tooth as it shattered within my mouth. Back to the other side ~ still had feeling! He must have gone nuts with the numbing agent, because 5 minutes later I could hear him stabbing my gums to check feeling, and he started laughing saying 'You MUST be numb if you can't feel this!'. Next thing I know my mom is holding my hand, my mouth is swollen and sore and I'm being walked to the car. The part that really sucks is the assistant had forgotten to give me the antibiotics ~ so I got a gnarly 'dry socket' infection or something and could barely eat solid food without it getting caught in the holes that were left from my teeth that were taken out. I would have to pick the food out until finally it healed. So, no big deal ~ you'll do fine ![]()

lol you don't want to hear my wisdom teeth story either. It was a nightmare!
Gotta say though, GO UNDER. Ever have a tooth pulled? I went under for my wisdom teeth but not for one I recently had pulled and it was 10 minutes of pulling, pushing and pain. It was horrible. Felt like he was going to rip my jaw off. even better there was a thunderstorm and the lights kept going off. I think to have wisdom teeth pulled while awake would be the most horrible experience you could possibly go through OMG it would be hell. Is that reassuring and therapeutic enough for you lmao. Sorry but it's the truth and if you don't get knocked out to get those teeth pulled, you will probably have nightmares for the rest of your life about it lol. You won't feel them pull, all the little pieces they need to clean out of your mouth, all the blood and the needle from the stitches if you go under. If you don't, you get to enjoy all that gross shit. |

It was a cake walk for me. I had all 4 of mine cut out about 2 years ago. They put me to sleep and when I woke up it was done. Spent about 24 hours at my parent?s house recuperating from the surgery and general anesthetic (slept most of the time. There was some pain but noting the meds they had me on couldn't handle. I think they gave me a weeks supply and I took them for two days. Had the surgery on Monday morning and was back by at work Wednesday afternoon.
As far as dying during surgery... well when you count back from 10 and are asleep by 8 that?s the way I want to go. The world could have ended while I was out and I never would have known. Good luck and don?t worry about it too much. That only makes it worse. |

getting them pulled isn't as bad as when they have to crack your jaw bone to get them out properly.

Fuck it. Im supposed to get mine taken out as well. I think I'll just let my pearly straight whites turn brown and crooked. I had my first cavity filled last year and it was the most horrifying experience of my life.
Fucking dentists. They are just the offspring of hitler.

Thanks everyone for your stories! So I guess the best thing to do is to go under, but I admit I'm scared of the IV they will have to inject in your arm. I am totally frightened of needles and dentists, it's going to be bad either way

I went under for mine... was like taking a nap. Woke up with a bunch of cotten in my mouth.
The nausea afterwards kinda sucked... but it's a good excuse to lay there, high on vicodine and watch TV for a couple of days. |

I was scheduled to have all 4 of mine taken out. I only had 1 taken out and will never have the others taken out. To make a long story short.......The oral surgeon keeps an X-ray of my jaw on his desk to remind himself to never attempt that type of extraction again.
Good luck. |

I don't think I have room in my jaw for all those teeth, so it might misalign my teeth if I keep it in, and I think it's bad for the teeth in front of the wisdom teeth, its getting pressure from the wisdom teeth trying to get out. I've been putting this off for almost a year now, but I know I have to do it eventually. |

Well i had 8 teeth pulled when i was 13, so my wisdon teeth fit fine in my mouth =) As my orthdotist said when i was 19 "those are the straightest 8s i've ever seen."
I do have one warning from when my sister got hers out, don't eat or drink anything citrius for about 2 weeks (orange juice, kiwis, etc) My sister did after 2 maybe three days, and I could hear her screm 3 rooms away. |

My wisdom teeth came in without me knowing. I was at the dentists, he asked if I had any problems, I told him nope, he said my wisdom teeth had all come in.
What a great story.

My wisdom teeth were easy to take out and my dentist did it with just local shots. The only problem I had was six months later my jaw started popping and I found out I had a tmj disorder and taking the wisdom teeth out moved my bite enough to set off the jaw.

I let them grow in the way nature intended.
I never fall for a dentist's bullshit. When you tell them you still have your wisdom teeth, all they see are dollar signs. fuck 'em.

![]() I had my top and bottom wisdom teeth taken out at the same time. They gassed me, and I tried to play it off like the gas wasn't working, so the assistant would keep turning it up, she didn't catch on for a few minutes, I was very amused. Then she gave me an IV and asked me to count backwards from 10. Tried as hard as I could to stay awake, just to see how long I could last, I made it to 8. Strong stuff. The worst part for me was the waking up. Is sort of feels like your swimming towards the surface of the water, then you break trough and wake up. They had my dosage messed up and I woke up too soon. I opened my eyes and scared the jebus out of the dentist and his assistant. Then I went right back out and didn't wake up until it was over. Over all it wasn't so bad. A couple days of swollen cheeks and codine, then you are good as new.

I HAD to get mine out
![]() I ONLY do things when the pain is too much to bear, believe me I avoided getting it done at all costs. But, I just let myself suffer more than I had to. Just be prepared for the bloody gauze in your mouth for a few days. That's probably the nastiest part. The pain, no problem, may sure you tell them you want the best pain killers and take them often. I think I had vicodin and I can tell you I was feelin good ![]() A needle to put you under is much better than feeling EVERY single thing they do believe me. Dentist put needle in arm, said count backwards from 10, I said 10, 9, 8 and woke up done ![]() |

they wouldn't put me under so they used local. They had to give me 8 shots before I stopped feeling the pain. It was the pressure when they were pulling it out that bothered me. It felt like they were taking it through the side of my head.
I guess it didn't hurt as much when the local wore off as I thought it would but then I was on pills. Just sleep off as much as you can. I still have two others that are borderline in needing to come out but I will wait until it really truly has to happen. |

Oh yeah, I got one for you....
I was in Norway for cold weather training with the US Marines when I needed to have mine pulled. This nurse asked me I wanted to get a week of leave from the Marines, and if I wanted to spend it at her house. Sure! She told me to smoke as much as I could right after my teeth were pulled. Sure enough, my mouth blew up like a balloon! I got a week of sick leave and spent it with this nurse eating jello and ice cream.

(excuse typing, this is a very drunk mule) I'd heard all those horror stories ads well, so I was terrified when I heard that all of my wisdon teeth had to come out. I know oodles of people who ate ice cream and soup for weeks afterwardsd, and were sick as dogs. So, I was nervous. Afterwards, I stagered my way home, and ate scrambled eggs, because I was hungry, and went to bed. When I woke up, my mom, who felt sorry for me, was there, and made me dinner. She isn'y q great cook, amnd the steak that she decid3ed on wasn't a good choice...it was tough as truck-tyres. I had terrible trouble at first, but as my muscles adjusted it became easier, and I finished the meal. The next say I was fine. Moral of the story; GET THROUGH THE FIRST DAY normally, DON'T EAT SOUP AND ICE VREAM sorry capslock just carry on as usual and you\ll be fine

My 18 year old son who is a wimp when it comes to pain had all four taken out about 6 weeks ago. They weren't impacted or anything. They hadn't even broken through the gum though cause they were coming in sideways pushing his other teeth forward.
They did it under novacaine..alot of shots and gave him laughing gas also. They gave him a couple of vicodin before they even started. The aftercare is what is the most important. The smartest thing they told him to do was to ice his jaw and cheeks for 20 minutes of every 30 minutes for as many hours as he could that first day. In fact, they gave him ice packs before we left the office. He had very little swelling because of this. He didn't feel like eating anything solid for about 5 days. He ate oatmeal, milkshakes, mega-enriched smoothies from the healthfood store, clam chowder and cream soups. The day after he had his removed, his best friend had his lowers removed under general anesthesia. He was very sick feeling the entire day. They didn't mention anything about ice packs. For two days he looked like he had mumps and was very sore compared to my son.

![]() You have nothing to worry about. All 4 of my wisdoms were severly impacted and I was a bit worried before I went in too, but it was no big deal.
You sit down, they inject you with some really quick drug that knocks you out. (I was watching the clock and didn't even make it 7 sec before I was out.) Then about an hour or so later a hot nurse gently wakes you up and asks you how you're doing. ![]() I went home took a couple Vikadin and went back to bed. Woke up ate some grub and went out to a Halloween party that night. A couple beers and a nice little J are perfect complements to the Vikadin they give you. Makes your feet tingle ![]() Another plus is now that they're out I never have the head aches like I used to, very nice. ohh and don't forget to ask them to safe your teeth... always nice to have a little momento from the experience. Good luck |

thanks everyone for all your wisdom teeth stories! It was therapeutic but some of your stories were quite frightning at the same time. I know I'm going under for sure, I don't want to be awake when they stitch me up ! This will probably be the most scariest moment of my life!

phogirl there are different types of anethesia you can choose.
1. You can go local with the novacaine, but if you're stressed out the adrenaline they pump in with it can cause anxiety (which it did me.) 2. You can go gas, but you have to deal with the nausea and that's not fun at all. 3. You can go with a combination of novicaine and an anti-anxiety drug like valium, or adivan (sp?) 4. Or you can go full on deep sleep anesthesia, once again you have nausea and dizziness to contend with when you wake up. Me I went for #3 after my incident with #1 and it worked like a charm. I showed up, they injected me with an anti-anxiety drug that made me relax, shot me up with novicaine to kill the pain and then pulled them all at the same time. The only after effects I suffered was I just wanted to go home and nap all day. I didn't give a shit what they did to me in there, I was just so relaxed...and that will be the only way I go from here on out. |

Vicodin, LOTS of Vicodin. I had three removed at once and I'm terrified to have the last one ripped out. NOT a fun experience. Get knocked out if at all possible.

I spend a lot of time out of my home country, where insurance from family took care of things better than the options here. That meant I had mine out later than I should have, and my jaw was very tight and sore for months before.
The teeth were coming in way wrong, almost horizontal apparently. They were also under the bone, so they had to chip to get them out. That meant I *had* to go under. "Okay, now, we're going to count to ten and you'll be out... 1... 2... Wake up, we're done." Then a bleary ride home, and some pain in my mouth. I was asleep before I hit the pillow. The next day I took off work, sat around being lazy and drinking fruit smoothies. The day after, I was back to work. The most annoying part of the whole thing was having gauze packed in my mouth all day.

of anything, i hate dental work the most. had a skin graft done once, that's the worst so far. novocaine shots in the roof of the mouth is HORRIBLE. wow. add to that i hate needles.
they're going to have to knock me out, or they'll have some dead doctors. i shit you not, i hate dental work, it would seriously be for their personal safety. i'm not that violent of a person. and apparently all my teeths are impacted. bleh.

Phogirl... Didn't one of your early posts say you are a transexual? Doesn't a deep fear of surgery somewhat hinder that?
