My 18 year old son who is a wimp when it comes to pain had all four taken out about 6 weeks ago. They weren't impacted or anything. They hadn't even broken through the gum though cause they were coming in sideways pushing his other teeth forward.

They did it under novacaine..alot of shots and gave him laughing gas also. They gave him a couple of vicodin before they even started.

The aftercare is what is the most important. The smartest thing they told him to do was to ice his jaw and cheeks for 20 minutes of every 30 minutes for as many hours as he could that first day. In fact, they gave him ice packs before we left the office. He had very little swelling because of this. He didn't feel like eating anything solid for about 5 days. He ate oatmeal, milkshakes, mega-enriched smoothies from the healthfood store, clam chowder and cream soups.

The day after he had his removed, his best friend had his lowers removed under general anesthesia. He was very sick feeling the entire day. They didn't mention anything about ice packs. For two days he looked like he had mumps and was very sore compared to my son.
