Ubuntu Users- Ubuntu 14.04
OK I did an upgrade, probably should have waited, so the issue I am having is that my monitor is now stuck in a 4:3 aspect ratio and not wide screen. I have googled it and nothing I have tried seems to be working. I am not a pro ubuntu user at all. I google all the fixs I need but need some help with this one.
Anyone know a solution or what I need to do to get this fixed? I don't like working on a computer monitor stuck in 1999. Thanks and appreciated!

I'd enjoy a few hours playing with your ubuntu Belinda.
Serious question, what's the deal with linux these days? As an end user. |

I really like it. I am able to run Photoshop, dreamweaver which I need both. Haven't had many issues with it and if I do, I can usually google it and find the answer and easily do it in the terminal. Its fast and free and it looks pretty. There are some cool customizing things you can do with it as well. I'd totally recommend getting a system to play with it on.

What video card are you using? Make sure you have the official drivers installed, Intel nvidia etc... You should be able to fix it that way.

This is probably a display driver issue.
You can run this command to check which driver is in use: lshw -c video If you have a Nvidia card , try to reinstall/install the default Nouveau driver with the package manager. You can also install the Nvidia driver : software & updates --> Additional Drivers |

It's either a driver support issue, as Kafka mentioned, or your X11 configuration may have been overwritten during the upgrade (it's happened to me before).
Using the terminal, what do you see when you type the command: ls -ltr /etc/X11/xorg.conf*

xorg.conf is obsolete. The system does not use it anymore.

And for Belinda, like mentioned before, I am also pretty sure it's a driver issue. Happens to me sometimes with Nvidia cards. Check your resolution, it's probably not widescreen.

I can't help as much because Ubuntu uses Unity and I have little admin experience with that. But Kafka's post has some good instructions. If you need more help post the output of his 'lshw -c video' command as well as:
Code:
sudo lspci -v | grep -i vga

If by obsolete you mean it is no longer required and does not get automatically generated, you are absolutely correct. However, if you're suggesting it is no longer read by the X11 system, that it is not correct. If the file is present, it will be processed and used for initial setup of X server according to the xorg-server (v1.15) documentation.
The reason I mentioned it is because she may have had custom screen resolutions defined in her previous xorg.conf which are no longer being recognized. Unfortunately, I can only speculate at this point since it's hard to debug such a problem without access to the system and console. Good luck OP. Let us know if/when you've resolved the issue. Seems like others are having similar problems based on the number of related posts on StackExchange and Ubuntu's launchpad bug tracker

I ended up doing a real number to it :/ As of midnight last night, I couldn't even get past the loading screen. SO i figured out how to backup the files from the live CD and get them on an external and now I am completely installing an older version. I think I will wait to upgrade to 14.04.

http://www.linuxmint.com/ You might want to give the LiveCD (no install needed) a try and see how you like it. It's a good time now since you are stuck on an older version. ![]()
