They need to find a way of paying scientists and doctors, as well as pharmaceutical companies who develop these things. So there is more incentive to go after them.
Perhaps companies who make something that is not patentable can receive tax breaks or something to allow them to continue the work. Whoever cures HIV officially, everyone buys 1 share of the company. Something. Right now a lot of work seems to get sidelined because the work is not patentable.

I know they receive tax breaks. I know that the one company that does something great will be famous and stocks will rise. However, they seem to really care about whether something is patentable. Meaning long term income.

There are several news reports where they speak about drugs that could be on the market, saving lives, but are not. Why are these drugs not being made for the masses?

No conspiracy theory, it is about long term income.

I remember hearing about the preventative drugs they use while watching the news earlier this year. I heard then that it was a %95 reduction in risk of catching HIV if you were on the drug cocktail. I figured that had to be a low estimate and didn't pay much attention to it because it was CNN. Maybe they have changed the drug combination since then though.

It's hard to say what the cost is.

The big pharma companies jack the price up on us in the U.S.

I would get the prescription and buy online from a Canadian pharmacy if it were me.

I know that there is a commercial on television right now with Bono saying that it's 13 cents a pill. But that is in Africa where our govt. subsidizes it for the Africans (thanks George Bush).

Too bad they won't subsidize it right here in the U.S.
Then we would be able to have that pill for 13 cents a day and eradicate HIV over time.

I would like to point something out here.

There are big pharma companies that are ITCHING to be able to use data from the adult industry and to be able to access the industry as a group.

they would pay BIG bucks and of course offer free healthcare in exchange for this anonymous data and for access to clinical trials and such, as a test group adult performers are a pharmaceutical companies DREAM.

I dont know why this has never been taken up by the industry but i am told by a pharma rep that the FSC is DEAD SET against it because 1 they cant wet their beaks and 2 because it would reveal the real STD rates within the industry

This is a damn shame because the benefits would be huge, and even the PR benefits could help us as an industry

Honestly, as a gay guy I think the CNN report is just bullshit. I would guess, from experience, that very few gay guys who become HIV positibe change their behavior. The ones I know who sleep around a lot, go without rubbers and just shrug thinking HIV meds would save them. Same thing online - guys on Grindr etc. want to fuck without rubbers all over.

Anyway. I have my views on this stuff. If you do decide to go on PrEp I hope you'd keep us updated on how it goes. I would be curious to see what happens.

I hate to bump an old thread however I have been doing some research here in Las Vegas for a colleague and have found the following regarding Truvada ( the once a day HIV prevention pill )

The big pharma companies jack the price up on us in the U.S. I would get the prescription and buy online from a Canadian pharmacy if it were me. I know that there is a commercial on television right now with Bono saying that it's 13 cents a pill. But that is in Africa where our govt. subsidizes it for the Africans (thanks George Bush). There are big pharma companies that are ITCHING to be able to use data from the adult industry and to be able to access the industry as a group. they would pay BIG bucks and of course offer free healthcare in exchange for this anonymous data and for access to clinical trials and such, as a test group adult performers are a pharmaceutical companies DREAM.
