I've been pulled over dozens of times and never had an issue. I've never had a negative experience with law enforcement.

Well let me see,

Me, and every friend I have that has ever bought a used car or motorcycle from a private party.
The heart surgeon who lives next door when he and his wife go antique shopping.
My friend who owns a garden center and landscaping company when he picks up tractor trailer loads of plants.
A percentage of everyone going in or out of my local casinos.
Etc, etc, etc

"This note is legal tender for all debts public and private" is written on all paper currency. The thought that being lucky/successful/frugal enough to have a large amount on you makes you a criminal is pathetic.

I didn't know they were after me until I saw the cop cars in front me.

They thought I was intentionally running from the police because I had something to hide, most likely drugs or a dead body or something. It was a full felony stop, shut down the freeway, handcuffs, detained me in the back of the squad car. They asked for permission to search my car; No problem, I had an over night back, some CDs, and a carton of smokes. When they couldn't find anything they brought out the dogs and searched again. There was nothing to find, and I was let go with a really nasty ticket.

Maybe I am naive, but I didn't fear getting into trouble. I had nothing to hide. What are they gonna do, stash drugs in the trunk of my car? Be serious.

Maybe my problem is it seems more and more of my friends these days are police officers.
A lot has changed since 2004. Almost a decade. That was a long time ago when it comes to national security and how civilians are being treated.

Again, I don't see why anyone would carry that much cash on them.

If you are going to buy a used car or motorcycle from a third party, use a certified check or do the transaction at the bank. Going antique shopping or buying stuff for your business - use your debit card or credit card. Loose your credit card or debit card you get a new one. Loose $5k because you loose your wallet and your out $5k.

I just don't see why anyone would carry that kind of cash on them - it's a huge liability.

Rochard, so many sellers don't trust anything but cash. And with good reason.

So since YOU don't think that it's a good idea for someone to carry "too much cash",
(whatever that arbitrary number is that you have decided that everyone else should follow), then it's ok for the police to confiscate and keep the cash, without even bringing a charge against you?

Besides the fact that it is legal to carry as much cash on you as you want, people have lots of reasons to carry that much money on them, or more.

I know old farmers where I come from who carry $1000s all the time in a baggy pocket. They don't believe in banks or electronic funds. They believe in cash. Lots of people don't use banks, and if given the choice and can get away with not using them, why would you?

And who cares if it's a liability? That is their problem, not a problem for the police.

Why stop at $5000? For some people carrying $50 is a liability. So lets say, anyone carrying more than $50 has it all confiscated and should be treated as a criminal. Because we want to be PC and make sure we don't exclude the poor in all of this.

what's odd in the $5k debate here is $5k ain't that much money any more. i don't mean that like i'm a baller, i mean that like $5k will barely get you a decent used car these days. fuck, go to any guitar shop and it's loaded, i mean loaded, with $5k guitars.

but more importantly, if $5k is the red flag amount to start getting suspicious, we need to adjust that. i'd think closer to $50k cash and clenched butt cheeks would be the benchmark suspicious character level.

I get that. At the same time when I showed up with $2k cash how did I know he wasn't going to hit me over the head and take my money?

The last time I sold a car to a third party we did it at the bank. We both banked at the same bank so it was just a direct transfer. You can even transfer money from one bank to different bank too.

A lot safer than walking around with so much cash, or risk loosing it.

I've noticed I've been called this a few times in the past few months.

I have a tremendous amount of faith in our government. Every time I have had to deal with our government or law enforcement, it's been a fair experience. At the same time, I've got nothing to hide from anyone.

I'm not saying our government is infallible; The US government is capable of tremendous waste and huge excesses in violations of the US Constitution.

The case with the multiple anal cavity searches is a good example - That's a massive invasion of privacy rights on so many levels. But this doesn't happen every day or even often; I've been pulled over dozens of times and only been searched once.

I just don't live in fear of our government coming after me for something I didn't do.

for many of us, it's not a matter of fear.

it's a matter of right v. wrong.

Sure, good for you. But you are aware your government and police have been caught many many times not being fair, right?

Most humans have the ability to understand that other people may not have the experience a white, middle aged, ex marine has.

Anyway, why don't you think the fourth amendment is important?

I think Americans should show respect for the millions who've studied, served and died over the years creating and protecting our right to FREEDOM... and be very pissed about this stuff. Every inch of freedom you give up is gone for good.

And I have PLENTY to hide from everyone, it's called a personal life.
I could give a fuck if some fools don't understand that each unwarranted intrusion into your privacy is a form of serial oppression. I understand it and it pisses me off.

christ, it's not that you're buying a car in the middle of the ghetto at 3am. You really sound paranoid towards your fellow citizens, but when government officials raid your property, dignity and privacy you welcome them with open buttcheeks! I have bought lots of cars with cash and I never ever worried 1 second about losing it.

PS - when you carry cash it's of no business to anyone but you.
