Roku is awesome. We've got one in every room. I use Plex media center on my desktop and it they have a Plex channel that will stream all my content.

You just but the units, there's no service to subscribe to...aside from Netflix, Hulu and the like.

Definitely worth the cost of admission.

I've got a lot of media streamers. Roku, AppleTV, Boxee, Xbox360, PS3, and the apps on my Panasonic plasma TV. Out of all of them, the Roku is the best.

I like Roku better than most set-top offerings, but I'm still a huge fan of XBMC. I did my homework, and NOTHING came close to touching XBMC. We've got it on 4 computers, as well as an iPad, and our Apple TV.

XBMC - with the MashUP add-on - will dance circles around any set-top ... even the Roku!

www.xbmc.org

CABLE-FREE SINCE 2010!! :D

You still need something hooked up to the TV that can run XBMC. The cheapest option is a Raspberry Pi. BUT, it won't run XBMC out of the box and it's a bit of leg work to get things set up.

PLEX is based on XBMC and a much better solution for getting set up. And it works with Roku.

Roku is by far the easiest, cheapest and most widely used option.

CABLE FREE SINCE 2007!!

I'm looking to get rid of cable TV finally and just go with Roku; the only thing I'll miss is sports.

Unfortunately, the sports streaming packages (NHL anyhow) only include games out-of-market, unless I'm wrong on that -- can anyone clear that up?

I use Plex server for everything else.

I have the XS. It's nice for watching Netflix but the interface can be clunky especially podcasts, lots of side scrolling of thumb images to get to what you need

If i remember correctly even NBA games airing on TNT would be blocked out for you until the game ends. It's the last piece of the puzzle for us as before we quit cable TV, my partner would have a fit if I killed cable TV and he can't watch the NBA so we're stuck for now.

Then a Roku might not be best for you. For streaming Netflix has more than any of the other channels you might find on Roku. It might still be good for you if you watch a lot of YouTube, but I'm going to guess that's not something you do.

There are a lot of channels, but I'd guess that most Roku users use Netflix 90% of the time. Just a guess, but I'd be willing to bet on it.

If you have a media server with your own stored content, then have at it. But without Netflix, Roku is pretty much worthless...at least here at my house. Hulu, Amazon and Pandora get a little bit of play, but Netflix is the streaming king.

Check out Google's Chromecast. It wasn't exactly what I had hoped for, but it can stream ANYTHING you open in your laptop / desktop / smartphone Chrome Browser to your TV. Costs $35 and works like a charm.

Someone mentioned MashUP for XBMC.. Whazzat?

Check out XBMC Hub.. It's a custom installer for XBMC that adds a bunch of addons, mainly for live streaming.. Never had an easier time getting free UFC than with that addon, with no popup ads etc.

For current and up to date TV, perhaps. But even without cable you can get Network TV in HD over the air, for free.

No one's library comes even close to what Netflix offers. I pay for Netflix, Hulu Plus and Spotify. All more than worth the $8 each.

There are tons of private channels for Roku, including a few porn channels that scrape the top tube sites.

The problem is nobody really makes a good box does what it should Roku is great for netflix and hulu but SUCKS at playing local or network media

WDTVLike is great for local media but sucks at netflix and hulu and specially connecting to things like XBMC

Android servers just aint there yet most cant really play 1080p

eventually you will get all this in your TV right outta the box

But the biggest travesty is the monopoly that cable TV has on television broacast we should be able to subscribe to whatever channels we want now and have the content delivered over the net

MashUP is everything that Navi-X could have been, but never was!!!

1) To install MashUP, go TO SYSTEM >> File Manager and then click "add source" under "A" and add the "fusion" source -- http://fusion.xbmchub.com (give it the name "fusion" in the lower box ...)

2) Now go back to SETTINGS >> Install from zip file and select "fusion"

3) In fusion, scroll down to VIDEOS and you will find the Mash2K3 repository. Enable/download this repo.

4) Go back to the XBMC home screen, then go to VIDEOS >> Video Add-ons and find "MashUP" and install it.

Enjoy!!

I have Plex but it isnt NEARLY as good as what the WDTV Live can do straight out of the box when it comes to playing media files...transcoding on the fly never will be...

I have both apple TV and a Roku. As stated, the UI for the Roku isn't the greatest but I get lots of free content from Amazon, which is nice. I would dump my Dish in a minute if I could get live sports though.

You still have to have an account. The TV has WiFi and is connecting to the internet. The functionality you'd get with a Roku is already present in your TV.

Why not just use that?

I run Plex on my media server box. Each Roku has the Plex channel which INSTANTLY, and without my help found and connected to my server. It was literally the EASIEST set up ever.

My 4 and 5 year old know how to do it
