There should be some kind of asshole tests for cops. You can be an asshole, but maybe there could be scale -- and if you rank too high on the asshole scale, then you can't be a cop.

I am somewhat local to this situation. He did lose his job but they say it had very little to do with the video. He was suspended for other things that led to his firing.

When the military is engaged in prolonged armed conflict...in order to keep the ranks filled with warm bodies...the enlistment standards are always lowered...This has been the case since the U.S. has had a standing military.

During the days of the draft the standards were pretty low to begin with and during the Second World War...when we had sixteen million warm bodies in uniform...there were alot of criminals with felony records that received waivers. The same applied during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Conflict. When the military needs warm bodies to fill the ranks they will do whatever is necessary to keep the ranks filled.

When the conflicts wind down the enlistment standards go back up. Those that entered under the lower standards are usually weeded out if they cannot bring themselves up to the higher standard. Kind of a chicken shit deal...if you ask me.

Many enter the military just to receive free lifetime medical care and have their way paid through college when they are discharged after four years of service...while at the same time being paid for a four year adventure...seeing the world...being presented with the opportunity to operate multi million dollar equipment...etc...etc...etc. Only about 10% serve in Combat Arms...the others are in various support roles for those serving in Combat Arms.

GIRARDVILLE - Gilberton's police chief was wounded by his own weapon late Saturday during an altercation while he was off duty at a Girardville bar, state police said Monday.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Mark Kessler suffered a gunshot wound to the hand that required treatment at Saint Catherine Medical Center Fountain Springs.

State police said Monday they are still investigating the incident and many questions remained unanswered.

Schuylkill Haven commander Sgt. Steven J. Stinsky said Kessler was in the Second Street Pub when a scuffle broke out among several patrons. For reasons unknown to state police, Kessler got involved and at some point a pistol he was carrying discharged, shooting him in the hand.

"He got mixed up. Why, at this point, is still under investigation," Stinsky said.

Troopers were called from the Frackville station about 12:10 a.m. Sunday, but Stinsky said Kessler left the bar before they arrived and was taken to the hospital by a friend.

Kessler could not be reached for comment Monday.

Gilberton Mayor Mary Lou Hannon said Monday that Kessler will be on sick leave with the department until further notice.

She said Patrolman Daniel Holderman will fill in the shifts and another officer may be needed.

"Depending on how long he'll be off, we may hire someone on a part-time basis," she said.

The mayor said she could not comment on the investigation into the Girardville incident, only to say Kessler's injury is to his left hand and that he is in a lot of pain.

"There's nothing I can say since the state police are still doing their investigation," Hannon said.

GIRARDVILLE - The Gilberton police chief's handgun that discharged during a scuffle in a borough bar early Sunday has yet to be recovered by state police.

Troopers are investigating an incident where Mark Kessler, who was off-duty at the time, became involved in an altercation already under way among patrons inside a crowded 2nd Street Pub about midnight when his pistol discharged, shooting him in the hand.

Sgt. Barry Whitmoyer, commander of the Frackville station, said Friday the weapon had not been accounted for and it is not known if the gun was fired intentionally or went off by accident.

"We don't have the weapon and still have a lot of questions to answer," Whitmoyer said. "At this point we really don't know what we have."

However, Whitmoyer said all indications show that no other weapons were involved.

"We're not finding anything that leads to another gun being there," Whitmoyer said. "We're finding there was one gun there and it was (Kessler's)."

While Sgt. Steven J. Stinsky, commander of the Schuylkill Haven station, said Monday the gun belonged to Kessler, it is unclear if the handgun is police-issued or his personal property.

After Kessler was shot, he had left the scene with a friend to seek emergency treatment at Saint Catherine Medical Center Fountain Springs before troopers arrived.

On Thursday, Kessler referred all comments to his attorney, Joseph Nahas, Frackville, who was unavailable.

Whitmoyer said interviews are still being conducted and that Trooper John Sleboda, the lead investigator, is trying to sort out details of the incident.

"We're getting a lot of different stories and the stories are changing," Whitmoyer said.

Definitely take away his badge, Mark Kessler is an embarrassment to law enforcement, and consider taking away his right to own a gun as well, since he is appears to be psychotic, and is a clear threat to himself and the community.
