This one-way ticket to Mars thing

Is it a hoax or will it actually happen when they say it will ? (2021)

I see there are 165,000 people applied so far. I know a few people i'd like to send!

The seven month journey just to get there could be a pain in the ass.

It will never happen. The government is printing money at this point just to give poor losers food.

They should pool their resources and send criminals/useless people there, only to make them walk out into space without a pressurized helmet. Pay per view that shit. I'd buy it.

really odd how it's a one-way trip.

im sure when it gets down to it, it will come to a protest of life and the gov't willing to send people out knowing full well they will die.

It's a dutch company doing it... privately funded... not by the US government, which... indeed has no money for it.

At 75, i think the 7-8 month journey would be a bit too much. Even if you were "still in shape"...

I don't really think it will happen. The reason now that it is a 1-way ticket is because it is too expensive and takes too long to get there. If it were a return trip they would have to bring enough fuel for the return trip which itself costs bazillions, or find a way to make the fuel on Mars for the return trip.

What I think will happen is that before this trip launches, someone somewhere will come up with a much faster and much cheaper way to to get there, making the prospect of a 1 way trip pointless.

Will be interesting to see where we are in even 25 years, mother nature will probably kick all of our butts Sure would suck to be on the flight to Mars only to find out someone has SARS or a variant

Or even possibly a manned spaceflight someday with experienced astronauts that has a realistic chance of returning like the original moon missions of the 1960s. Not really a reason to send people to their far away deaths just because it's possible.

No one is going to pay and it's never going to happen for inexperienced people to go into space. It's arduous and physically demanding, even much more so than being a test pilot for supersonic jets which I guess would be the closest analogy.

I think the plan is not just to go and take pics.
IF i were to volunteer my life to go there, id be wanting to set the stage for Terra-forming the planet. Dumping lichens and algaes, perhaps setting up a machine that melts ice for use. Setting up a green house gas factory..lol Maybe orbit theplanet dropping huge chunks of ice onto it to provide cloud/dust cover. There are 1000 ideas floating around that could be done.

The human race should get another planet under our belt, it just makes sense.

I agree with that. It's the safest bet for the long term continuation of the human race. It's just that the technology and resources we have now to do this are in their infancy. Traveling to another planet and then terra-forming it to enable generations of human survival is no small task which would require trillions of dollars of expense and realistically more advanced technology than we have available today to do it efficiently. There's no way any single country, group of countries and/or consortium of corporations could make this happen with the world economy and state of technology as it stands today. Scientists have some good ideas about how to go about it, but that's a long way from making it a feasible plan at the moment.

That has been done since the dawn of human history. It's called war.

A certain percentage is certain to die for the good of the many.

Sure...it's bullshit but that's humans for you!

Spending the money there instead of in Iraq, i bet we would already have some amazing technology from it. Perhaps even be using some of it by now to make this more feasible. Not that im saying it is the usa who should be spending the money for this. Just pointing out that that amount of money is wasted all over. Why not try it on something that would yield a positive outcome for mankind.

Just goes to show you how fantastic this beautiful country is. Alas, the politicians and government employees are about the only people who want to stay. Every friend I have ever had - except for one guy who is working for DeBeers in a diamond mine, and another who owns a ranch in Alberta - is living in the States or in Europe.

I'll go to Mars. I won't pay, but I will go anywhere to get out of this spineless beaurocracy.

Yes the human race will eventually go to mars and when they do they will in time transform it to the same shithole as on earth.

I'd go on 2 conditions.

1. I had kids. (not being nasty.)
2. I wasn't going to mars.

The smarter people here may know what I'm getting at.

I'm with you on that point. There's plenty of money wasted on the military-industrial complex and other things.

A pretty decent chance of success of reaching the Far East as far as he and his navigators and the Queen of Spain were concerned. These were smart people who were experienced with sailing and exploration who made a calculated decision with what they thought was a reasonable chance of success. It wasn't a suicide mission by any stretch of the imagination.

Now it turned out they had miscalculated the circumference of the Earth and didn't realize the distance was so great. Luckily they hit land in the Caribbean before things got too desperate. Once they learned more about the true width of the Atlantic Ocean they were able to make multiple trips back and forth to Europe fairly easily.
