Anyone have a good recommendation for a vegetable steamer?

Steaming Veggies, you lose a lot of the good stuff in them, better to stir fry them

Just use a metal strainer over a pot of boiling water...

Vendzilla is right though, you steam them too much and you lose a lot of the good vitamins and minerals in them, when steaming veggies its typically best to go with ones that can be eaten raw, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, etc so all you need to do is give them a quick heat up

Stainless steel seems the best compared to silicon which will just warp out of shape and drop your food when you try to remove it from the water. Bamboo is also problematical because unless you dry it really well, mold can grow on it between uses. Same with woven baskets. Stainless insert and some tongs to remove it when it's hot is old but good.

that's not true.. generally 15 mins leaves nutrients in tact, in some vegetables it actually enhances health properties, ie kale.

I just use a pot.. just enough water to create steam, bring to a hard boil then toss them in and turn off the heat and pop a tight lid on it, comes out perfect after about 15. Not that i eat a lot of rice but i'll steam that the same way, needs more time to steam obviously.

I have a three tiered steamer like this one. It's great when you have different veggies that require different cook times. Also works great for steaming hot dogs.

I've been doing them in a skillet, as I prefer veggies warmed up.

I am not looking to cook out all of the good stuff in that regard.

That's about as long as I am cooking them in the skillet. Just enough to get them warm.

I made this last night, was delicious:

4 cups of carrots (baby carrots or similar sized pieces)
1/2 cup water
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 tbs butter
1 tbs honey

Combine all in a pan, bring to a boil, cover and let boil gently for 5-7 minutes

Serve. I fished out the carrots and reduced the liquid to a glaze as well. Was really good and really easy.

I'm getting to be a little porker over here, so I decided to do no research and just stop eating like a dumbass and eating only salads and vegetables for a while. I'm pretty enthused about it to be honest. I know this would be healthier with no butter etc, but I'm not trying to be a fitness freak, just eat a bit better.

Recipe is from Jacques Pepin - the man, the master.
