Looks like a bluefish to me.

Hard to judge the size, but blues can get quite big. If it is a blue, and over 18 inches in length, you will probably want to remove the 'redline,' also known as the 'bloodline' when you are preparing it, otherwise it will have an exceptionally pronounced 'fishy' taste.

In the ocean, I have only caught blues in the 1-2 foot range, but in the Chesapeake the ones I've caught averaged around 4 feet in length.

Felt good didn't it. There's nothing like the rush you feel from fighting the fish and finally landing him. Only thing better than that feeling is sex to me.

OK, same fish. We call them bluefish here on the east coast of the US. I did not know they were so widespread, with so many different common names.

In the Chesapeake, the popular way of fishing for them is trolling with "eels" - foot long pieces of brightly colored surgical tubing with leaders running through them, a small weight at the head and a hook at the tail.

If that invite applies to all, I may take you up on the offer.

Caught a couple of Cobia - all the same way, noticed them lurking under the boat and dropped a bait fish right over the side. Not too keen on eating them though - there were what seemed like pockets of gristle in the meat.

Personally, I love bailing dolphin (AKA dorado or mahi mahi). Great to eat, fun to catch, and you can easily catch your limit when you get into a school of them.

Oh ya Im serious and Cobia is one of the best tasting fish in the ocean IMO it should have been solid white and medium texture...no blood line clearly if you got anything resembling gristle it wasnt properly fileted. Its also excellent raw tasting like a bit milder yellowtail.

Caught him at night on a freeline with a hardtail about the size of the fish the thread starter posted.

We catch dolfin all the time by the dozens (the chicken ones) somtimes we get a big bull or sow. We also catch limits of Red and mangrove snapper regularly and our share of King and Spanish Mackeral and Grouper and Amberjack...among others....

Also for the record we head out around 4-430AM and come in well after dark. We do not allow alcohol on the boat, the Captain is THE defacto ruler, if you get sea sick...tough it out we dont turn around, we fish seriously and when you go 100 miles offshore and the temps hit 114 degrees or more safety is the absolute primary goal and alcohol is counter to that objective. We have fun and we catch fish and a cold beer when we get back on land is awesome. All expenses (gas, bait, ice etc are evenly divided with the group picking up the boat owners share.) Typically 3 days off shore split 4 or five ways will come to 200-300 bucks per person total for all 3 days.

Sounds like a bargain with fuel cost being what it is. How big of a boat are you talking? I've got a 23 footer, but more than 3 people and it starts getting a little crowded. I usually sell the surplus fish to the fish markets to cover costs - it pisses off the local fishermen there selling their own catch, though, when I show up with a cooler slam full of dolphin.

Here in NC, we only need to go 30 miles out to be in dolphin and tuna territory.

BTW, why the Banana clause?

You just got on my "good guy" list! And did I mention that I LOVE fishing? Which time of the year is the best?

Personally I just started getting Seabass here in Norway, which was not a part of our fauna until mid 90s. It is a really fun fish to catch. Other than that it is salt-water trout, salmon and halibut is always fun - especially when you get the 150 pound ones. In the local lakes I typically aim for the trout - hard, but fun to catch.

Here in NC, we only need to go 30 miles out to be in dolphin and tuna territory.

BTW, why the Banana clause?
Depending on whose boat we go out in its 24-26 feet Its a center console and we mostly bottom fish or freeline we usually fish 5 people some times 6 on the 26 footer.

In FL its not legal to sell the fish commercially without a commercial license we normally split it all up and bring it home for friends or to keep for ourselves....we usuall cut loose King Mackeral, Sharks and other fish we dont much care to eat....I mean why keep a 30 lb king when you have hundreds of pounds of snapper and grouper....and personally I wont eat any fish cooked that i wouldnt eat raw.

We catch dolfin anywhere from about 5 miles out...dependinmg on water temp and clarity when we make a 100 mile trip its to the edge of the continental shelf or to an area called DeSoto Canyon, thats for BIG Tuna, Amberjack, bull Dolfin Wahoo and Billfish.

As for the Banana thing...Its a very very old fishing legend...google it but Bananas are bad luck on a fishing vessel and I am not superstitious but it certainly has had merit enough times that we now believe. truth is when yer even 30 miles offshore why tempt fate ;)

Here theres always something good to catch depending on the time of year yellowfin tuna is winter grouper is year round as are snapper but there are open and closed seasons which change from year to year as do catch limits.
