i was never much of a drinker, it tends to make me feel ill before i get drunk. i enjoy a few beers but not much beyond that typically. i can see how people can fall into it and then can't get out though. i have several friends who are alcoholics and they build up a tolerance to it and can't go a day without it. they've lost relationships, opportunities, health concerns and more. i couldn't do it just for the health reasons. i doubt my alcoholic friends will live long lives. it always seems to start out as a social thing when you're young but as you get older, they just drink by themselves mostly. it doesn't seem like much fun. i am a bit of a hypocrite because i smoke weed, i justify it as i only smoke a bowl which is like 1/4 joint in the evenings but its still a vice. if money was no object i think i'd be traveling the world rather than sitting by myself getting drunk every day.

Ultimately life is what you make it, you sound like you're suffering from depression and masking it with alcohol. Not going to give you the rah rah speech, but there's been millions who have been dealt a horrible starting hand and went on to lead happy successful lives. Instead of mocking happy people, why not learn from them.

And unlike other drugs, everyone who is at the starting out age is told alcohol is great. Sure you choose at that point whether to drink or not, but having zero idea or any possible comprehension that you may be one of the minority who get affected totally different than the majority.

wouldnt say im depressed. just indifferent. not sad, not happy, not mad. not much excites me. could be because i grew up in a rough place

like i said as long as you pace yourself, can control your emotions, and dont black out and act a fool. your only problems will be with others who think its bad for you.

at school we had about 6 major presentations about how bad drugs were. we had 1 about alcohol and noone took it seriously and we all just laughed.

Come on Currently Sober, I am not your biggest fan, but you can do better than this. You have given up before, who says you cannot do it again? Your obviously a smart guy who has fallen on some shit times.

I fucking love to drink but now that I'm getting older the hangovers knock me on my ass. When I was in my mid-20's I could drink every day, party like a rock star with my friends all hours of the night, and have little to no hangover the next day. Now, at 32, when I drink I'm laid out in bed with a nasty hangover for an entire day or two. It makes drinking not even worth it, really. It's like if I want to drink for a night with some buddies I have to plan on taking two or three days off from everything just so I can recover. Because of how severe my hangovers are now I rarely drink anymore. Once a month, sometimes twice. I miss being young!

Earlier in this thread you said you went 30 years without ever tasting alcohol, so were you stupid and naive for all that time? You obviously got by just fine for those 30 years without alcohol and now that you drink heavily you admit that you don't even know how to be happy. Sounds to me like its not working too well for you. I have no "rainbow bubble" as you put it, no matter what obstacles you could throw my way, using drugs and alcohol to cope would never be a decision I'd make.
