It's time for the US to go metric

Here we go again, someone or some organization making yet another push for the US to join the rest of the known universe in using the far simpler and far more organized metric system for weights and measures. Their medical field already does, by the way. When an American nurse or doctor talks about giving someone "10 cc's" of something, cc is CUBIC CENTIMETER. They aren't talking teaspoons and quarts in US hospitals.


Anyway this has always been on my "It ain't never gonna happen in my lifetime" list, so I'm not going to start holding my breath, doubly so since it really doesn't much affect my life in any way if they want to stay in the dark ages of imperial measure.

Btw although metric is the official system in Canada (since the mid '70s) pounds and MPH/MPG and gallons and using feet for a person's height are still very much alive amongst the general population here.

it would probably be easier for imports and exports to be using the same type of measurement but i'd imagine there would be a large cost associated in switching over now. mechanics, carpenters and many other trades mostly still use the imperial system here. there is little advantage to switching for americans.

I think at this point, this country continues to use miles/feet, pounds and others because we always have and it's everywhere. Look at all the road signs mentioning miles or MPH that would have to change. That alone would probably cost billions of dollars.

In the early years it was a problem with machine tools and inspection tools. Every machinist in America would've had to replace expensive micrometers,calipers,gage blocks.

Machine tools were also a big issue. Today we still work off drawings of parts that were created in metrics and then converted so they can be manufactured. Most tolerances look like this.. +- .03937[1.0 mm] And a lot of mistakes still are made in manufacturing because of it.

I don't think it would make much difference at this point. Everything is computerized, and much of the time labels and things are already in both applicable units of measure. I had an American visitor ask me in the grocery store the other day if a a kilo of hashbrowns was enough for her recipe (she needed just over a pound) which was easy enough to answer.

How old were they? I think everyone in my generation knows a kilo is 2.2 pounds.

I talked to my Dad about this just recently as his work has to convert from metric to US sometimes with the tubing machines they run and the time it takes to switch over a machine can be eight hours sometimes.

He was inquiring to one of the main uppers on how much money it would save us if they converted to the metric system.

40 years after the UK went metric, all roadsigns are still miles. When its hot it's in Fahrenheit when its cold they go Celsius. Anyone over 50 still does everything in inches. Height is still done in ft and inches, and weight in stones for people.
