In the early years it was a problem with machine tools and inspection tools. Every machinist in America would've had to replace expensive micrometers,calipers,gage blocks.

Machine tools were also a big issue. Today we still work off drawings of parts that were created in metrics and then converted so they can be manufactured. Most tolerances look like this.. +- .03937[1.0 mm] And a lot of mistakes still are made in manufacturing because of it.
