They turn it around by saying what is the one thing that is not at accident on that list or they did not mean to die that way? It would be death by firearms lol. All the rest are opps I didn't mean that

Smoking is a choice an individual makes for himself.
Getting shot while in school is a choice an individual makes for others.

Big difference.

This.

Most of the big ones there are personal choices, or required personally or socially.

Getting killed by someone is not usually a personal choice.

Things are always being done to make most of them safer aswell, except guns obviously.

Since there is already a category for drug abuse are we to assume 31,000 people died from "unintentional poisoning" eating the wrong thing?

edit; I must be fucked up, look at that sentence composition.

So firearms is the second largest intentional killer? Imagine if we removed firearms out of the hands of criminals and crazy people....

http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/hom...weaponstab.cfm

so in 2005 we are back to 1976 levels and less.
I think this is great considering the population from 76 to 05 and amount of weapons manufactured during those years.

RIGHT,
So why did you say anything about it is a CHOICE??

It is a Choice to kill yourself, but that is illegal! HA

But then again I guess the people who died from second hand smoke or a drunk driver paid their Fair Share!

We need to ban doctors, that will cut that medical error number down drastically.

We also need to arm more patients so they have a chance to defend themselves.

Medicinal errors resulting in death come from a choice that a doctor (an individual) makes for others. It was not a choice made with malice, but it was a choice.

Stats and political agendas aside, the reason for a death is not relevant after the fact. Dead is dead.

A personal note about handgun murders...

My young cousin was killed by a handgun several years ago. During a heated argument his best friend unloaded an entire clip into him. I was a pallbearer at his closed casket funeral. The inanimate object that killed him was of no concern to anyone in the family or any of his friends. No one cried about gun control or stats about gun violence. It wasn't even brought up once. He was dead, it was not relevant.

Day dreaming about firearm bans and a perfect world where criminals and crazy people (our in our case his best friend) don't have access to firearms is exactly that, a dream. We live in reality, guns exist, they are not going anywhere anytime soon and people are going to die because of them and because of many other reasons not associated with firearms, as that graph points out. People die. And when they do, what killed them doesn't really mean a whole lot. You may think it does, but it doesn't. You may be concerned with who killed them and want justice to be served, but once it is that too loses importance. I suppose if justice is never served it could always be a thorn but our family didn't have to deal with that so I wouldn't know for sure.

its not about justice. its about preventing other people from having to go through the same thing. its pretty short sighted if all you care about are the people directly around you.

How many family members have you personally buried who have been murdered by a firearm?

Not a single person in his 500+ person funeral was concerned with gun control laws. I guess we are all short sided.

Keep dreaming your dream of a gun free America. Except it won't really be gun free, only the good citizens won't have them. The criminals and police will always have them. You can't permit or legislate guns out of the criminal's hands. That is a fact.

Medical errors is huge - That's insane.

Over 11k gun deaths is shocking as well.

The idea that 11K is OK because its less than another figure seems strange to me.

What sort of person thinks 11K needless deaths is OK?

Keep in mind that a LOT of those gun deaths are criminals killing other criminals.

Look at Chicago...gang members slaughtering gang members. That's been going on since the 1920's there.

Gangs in some cities kill each other every day in fights over "territory". (which is all due in some part to the govt.'s prohibition on drugs).
And the innocent people that they kill? They won't be any more "safer" if guns were made illegal.

Gangs don't really give a damn about laws.

I think our society would be well served to go after the CAUSE of people wanting to shoot other people in the first place.

Drug laws certainly have contributed to a LOT of violence (especially on the border with Mexico). Addressing that (stopping the "war on drugs") would cut gun violence down immediately.

As for what happened to those poor kids in Conn., there is no answer.
The govt and the law cannot protect us from mentally deranged people. That guy would have done what he did no matter what. If not a gun, he would have burnt those kids alive by setting fire to the school, or blew the school up and killed them...or even more horrible: killed them with a knife.

Some people are just born with mental problems. I don't think there is a realistic answer to trying to stop a single crazy individual from doing bad things.

less legal guns = less illegal guns as all illegal guns start out as legal somewhere in the chain. regardless, i am not just talking about firearms but all deaths. if no one was ever concerned how a person died, then things like cures for diseases, seatbelts, swimming lessons, etc would all be considered a waste of time.

True and those personal choices cost the tax payers of the country far more than the others. If they were not paying out all that money for those " Personal Choices " maybe there would be better mental health in the US and there for, less fire arms related deaths.

How do you compare car ownership with gun ownership? You can't transport 5 people down the highway in an AR15.

In theory you are correct. However, in reality it doesn't work that way. I live in a country where it is next to impossible to legally obtain a firearm and it's incredibly expensive to buy them. So what do the locals do if they can't afford one or can't find one to steal? They make their own one shot pistols.

Point is, Pandora's box is open. People are going to find a way to get guns if they want them. And if they can't get them, they will make their own. It happens all over the world.

So long as guns exist on the planet, people will buy, sell, trade, and steal them. So long as there are bullets on the planet, people will use one of those guns or make their own to fire them. Even though I come from a family who approves of guns, I would be happy to see all of them gone. But you would have to take them from EVERYONE including the police and military, otherwise it wouldn't work.

Sure, you can take swimming lessons, driving lessons, wear a safety belt, take medicine, take shooting lessons, and anything else you can try to do to stay alive, but once you're dead you're dead. Then it doesn't matter. The problem with guns is that it is impossible to get them out of the hands of criminals. This fact holds true the world over. And you can't have a society where only the criminals have them. Gun control comes down to everyone is armed or no one is armed. I'll support either one, but if no one is armed, the criminals will still find a way to get them or make them.

Please tell everyone how to do it. Explain to me (like I'm a 12 year old) how you are going to stop the buying, trading, stealing of firearms in a country that has over 200 million of them already in existence. How do you stop a "crazy" from acquiring a firearm without locking them all away or keeping them chained to the wall?

How do you stop a criminal from getting them?

They government can pass all the laws they want, it's a waste of time and paper. Trying to stop private gun sales (legal or illegal) is like trying to stop the sale of pussy. Never, ever gonna happen. There will always be someone willing to sell one to another person and there are always people who will steal them, even if they have to steal it from a family member.

There is no argument. What you have are people living la-la land dreaming of a gun free utopia, and reality. That's it. Where you choose to live is your decision, but I'm going to stay in reality where there are over 200 million personal firearms in the USA alone and nothing is going to stop someone for acquiring one of they want one.

Unless you find a way to not only find and destroy all 200+ million of them (and every bullet), but also completely ensure that no firearms will ever be imported from Mexico or another countries, legally or illegally, then there is no debate or argument to be had. And that doesn't even get into the problem of the authorities being the only people legally armed and criminals making their own.

Perhaps I argue like a 12 year old so that it is easily understood and digested by most of the posters on GFY, but at least I don't believe in fairy-tales like most of the kids around here.

Now if you all gather 'round, I'll tell you a bed time story. Once upon a time...

Suicide consistently ranks in the top ten causes, but is never discussed to discourage thoughts about it. http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/suicide.htm
2009 stats for the US:
Firearm suicides
Number of deaths: 18,735
