The house I live in now is over 5,000 square feet. I'm telling you that for a reason.

Before I moved here in late 2008, I was going to power my old home in South Carolina with solar power.
I had a company come out and give me the quote.

My old home was a small 1,700 sq. foot house. To convert it to solar power would have cost $54,000 !!!!

I asked the company "WHY" that much? They told me that every patent for solar power was owned by oil companies. And the oil companies make sure the price is kept high enough that it isn't feasible for home owners to do it.

So if my 1,900 sq. foot home required a system that was $54,000 (the panels were installed on the ground on mechanical stands and followed the sun during the day and charged batteries for the evening...it was completely self contained with no outside elecrtic power neeeded)...then I can only imagine that a solar power system for my much bigger home would be almost TRIPLE the cost.

My power bill averages around $500 a month. Or $6,000 a year.

So if it cost $150,000 to go solar in my home...it would take 25 years for the solar unit to have paid for itself in savings.

No Paul...believe me...I WANT to go solar. Who wouldn't? But the cost is so outrageous that it makes no sense.

And that is what I'm saying about our federal govt.

They know what the oil companies have done. And yet they don't do anything about it.
They would rather have arguments about abortion and contraception and Romney with a dog on the roof of his car and Obama eating a dog....Shit that just isn't very important. But it's very distracting.

If I was told that my taxes were being used to actually help poor people, pay for health care, and converting our country to solar energy...then I wouldn't say a word.

But if ANY federal dollars are actually being spent on that...it's a TINY fraction.

The rest is all funneled back to their cronies at home and mostly pumped into the war machine.

Fuck that.

But if they take some of the funding out of these companies people might lose their jobs and you seem to be against any action that might cost people their jobs.

Sorry my mistake, I meant take the funding by big companies out of the political system. Obviously funding things like Solar Energy is a no brainer, so long as the panels are not imported from China. Look at the the "Made in ????" label to see the problem.

Why do people hate Socialism and love big business supplying everything. Then turn around and hate big business for controlling the system?

In the UK we had Unions controlling a Government and it was a mess. So I don't advocate that.

removing funding from businesses of the political system is something I am very much for. I actually think they should put something like a $500 max cap anyone can contribute to a political party or person. These days the politicians are for sale so there never really is a change. New guy is same as the old guy because they are all bought by the same people.

In order for funding by big companies to be taken out of the political system the Supreme Court will have to overturn a decision it made a few years ago about this subject...they decided something along the lines of money being "free speech".

Government and politicians are what the "people" allow. Government by the people and for the people is not practiced by the people. The "people" do not do their due diligence and are apathetic...they prefer just to "bitch" instead...of participating.

The price has really dropped in the past two years. Add in federal tax credits and state incentives, and you could most likely get your current house done for less than the estimated cost of your previous house. I've been watching the market and considering doing it myself.

I was looking at a 2.4 k output system at my old home (I think...hard to remember exactly) And it used the same technology that I had seen on television on that show where the guy builds new homes for people who have suffered some kind of tragedy.

It was going to be out on my property in the middle of a field with perfect access to the sun and it would actually move the solar panels to follow the sun during the day. And it also stored energy for use at night.

I wouldn't have used any energy at all from the grid...and potentially would have been selling my excess energy to the power company and GETTING a small check every month.

Is that the same kind of system that you are talking about that has dropped way down in price?

If that's the case then it would pay for itself in 8.3 years time and might be worth going after.

But in my humble opinion...IF global warming is such a big deal and this would also help lower our dependence on foreign energy...Why the fuck didn't the govt. take a trillion dollars and NOT give it to the banks and just install solar power on every building in the country?

I understand what your saying, I am my own business, I have an accountant, and I write off everything. But the average person who works for someone else doesn't have the same tax advantages as someone who owns their own business.
