Before I moved here in late 2008, I was going to power my old home in South Carolina with solar power.
I had a company come out and give me the quote.

My old home was a small 1,700 sq. foot house. To convert it to solar power would have cost $54,000 !!!!

I asked the company "WHY" that much? They told me that every patent for solar power was owned by oil companies. And the oil companies make sure the price is kept high enough that it isn't feasible for home owners to do it.

So if my 1,900 sq. foot home required a system that was $54,000 (the panels were installed on the ground on mechanical stands and followed the sun during the day and charged batteries for the evening...it was completely self contained with no outside elecrtic power neeeded)...then I can only imagine that a solar power system for my much bigger home would be almost TRIPLE the cost.

My power bill averages around $500 a month. Or $6,000 a year.

So if it cost $150,000 to go solar in my home...it would take 25 years for the solar unit to have paid for itself in savings.

No Paul...believe me...I WANT to go solar. Who wouldn't? But the cost is so outrageous that it makes no sense.

And that is what I'm saying about our federal govt.

They know what the oil companies have done. And yet they don't do anything about it.
They would rather have arguments about abortion and contraception and Romney with a dog on the roof of his car and Obama eating a dog....Shit that just isn't very important. But it's very distracting.

If I was told that my taxes were being used to actually help poor people, pay for health care, and converting our country to solar energy...then I wouldn't say a word.

But if ANY federal dollars are actually being spent on that...it's a TINY fraction.

The rest is all funneled back to their cronies at home and mostly pumped into the war machine.

Fuck that.
The price has really dropped in the past two years. Add in federal tax credits and state incentives, and you could most likely get your current house done for less than the estimated cost of your previous house. I've been watching the market and considering doing it myself.
